Google Inc (NASDAQ: GOOGL) announced on Wednesday on its official blog the launch of “Project Fi” its own wireless service in the U.S. The company would be partnering with mobile carriers Sprint Corp (NYSE: S) and T-Mobile Us Inc (NYSE: PCS) to launch the project.
Nick Bilton, The New York Times columnist, was on CNBC recently to discuss the kind of consumers Google is targeting with this service.
Attractive To Kids
“I think that what you are seeing is, this is going to be super attractive to kids,” Bilton said. “I met a bunch of college students recently and one of the kids was telling me was that what he did was he got an old iPhone he bought on Craigslist, he bought a little wireless carriers that costs about $40 a month and then he used that to send data to his phone.”
He continued, “And then he had WhatsApp and all these other things on the phone, he didn’t actually have a phone number that was tied to it, but he was using Facebook and Google and Twitter and all these different things.”
Just Data Plan
“And I think that’s what Google is going after, they are going after people that want to spend $40 a month or whatever the number would be to just have a data plan and be able to use all the services and the products that are out there”
“And this is very different from the past because in the past you didn’t had things like WhatsApp and WhatsApp voice and all these different messaging service that exist today,” Bilton concluded.
