, the online trade-in service that powers Target's (NYSE: TGT) trade-in program, has provided Benzinga with a list of the top five tablet trade-in values. As expected, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) dominates the list of trade-in values. This could be attributed to the high cost of the iPad Air and other Apple tablets (all of which retail for $299 or more) versus the low cost of its competitors. There are other expensive tablets available, however, but most of them did not make the list.

1. iPad Air -- up to $425This is a decent trade-in value considering that the iPad Air sells for a maximum of $929 (for the 128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular edition). At $425, consumers will recoup roughly 45 percent of the original purchase price.Apple has not yet announced when the next iPad will be released, but the company is expected to unveil the new iPhone on September 9. This would be the third year in a row that a new iPhone arrived in September. If the iPad release schedule is maintained as well, the rumored iPad Air 2 should arrive in early November.

2. iPad Mini with Retina Display -- up to $315The most expensive iPad Mini with Retina Display (128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular edition) retails for $829. That's only $100 less than a comparable iPad Air, but the Mini Retina's maximum trade-in value is $110 lower than the Air.Consequently, those who plan to sell a Mini Retina will only recoup 38 percent of their investment (versus 45 percent for the Air).3. iPad 4 -- up to $260Apple currently sells the 16GB Wi-Fi model for $399 and the Wi-Fi + Cellular edition for $529. That's $100 less than the introductory price. It is also much lower than the discontinued 128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular edition, which retailed for $929 when it was released in January 2013.Unfortunately, that means consumers will only recoup about 28 percent of the device's original (maximum) purchase price.4. Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 -- up to $183Both the 32GB and 64GB models are currently on sale at Best Buy and Samsung.com, but the price remains fairly high. The 32GB iteration retails for $649 (versus the $749 MSRP), while the 64GB model is going for $749 (versus $849).Based on the sale price, consumers will recoup roughly 24 percent of the purchase price if they choose to sell it now. If they purchased the device before it was on sale, however, they will only recoup 21 percent of the purchase price.5. iPad Mini -- up to $175The original iPad Mini came out in 2012 with a starting price of $329 (for the 16GB Wi-Fi model), but consumers could spend as much as $659 for the 64GB Wi-Fi + Cellular edition. If a consumer traded in the latter model right now, he or she would receive up to $175 for it -- or 26.5 percent of the original purchase price. That is actually a few percentage points higher than the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2, which was released earlier this year.Disclosure: At the time of this writing, Louis Bedigian had no position in the equities mentioned in this report.
