ST. LOUIS, July 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU) announced today it has named Raymond V. Shepherd III Vice President of Federal Government Relations to advance Peabody's public policy and regulatory interests on American energy and environmental matters.  

Based in Washington, D.C., Shepherd has responsibility for strengthening Peabody's relationships with key U.S. policymakers and stakeholders, and is a key liaison to national industry and trade associations. A former congressional counsel and staff member, Shepherd has two decades of government relations experience leading bipartisan solutions and legislative strategies. He reports to Senior Vice President of Government Relations Fred Palmer. 

Prior to Peabody, Shepherd served as partner and chairman of the Congressional Investigations Practice Group at Venable LLP. He also worked on Capitol Hill for 12 years as an advisor, helping craft high-profile legislation on both House and Senate committees. Shepherd earned a Juris Doctorate degree at George Washington University Law School and a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy at Yale University.

Peabody also named Chris Curran as Vice President of Corporate Communications, reporting to Vic Svec, Senior Vice President of Global Investor and Corporate Relations. Curran has more than 20 years of experience in corporate communications across healthcare, manufacturing, and consumer goods and services. He earned a bachelor's degree in communications from the University of Connecticut.
