Hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, who just last week said he wouldn’t vote for President Joe Biden, weighed in on the 2024 election yet again on Monday.

What Happened: “The biggest mistake Democrats have made is supporting @POTUS [Joe] Biden for a second term,” said Ackman in a post on X, formerly Twitter. By supporting Biden, the Democrats have fed him with false hope that he could win the election, he said.

This prompted Biden to stay on, preventing better and younger candidates from emerging, the founder of Pershing Square said. He noted that polls now increasingly suggest that former President Donald Trump will likely win by a large margin,

To make matters worse, it might be too late for an alternative Democrat candidate to emerge, Ackman said. “And I suspect the polls understate Trump's margin as I believe many are not willing to admit that they intend to vote for Trump.”

“Handing the election to Trump will be Biden's legacy.”

Why It’s Important: Last week, Ackman took a swipe at Biden for not acting enough on the American hostage issue. Ackman, though Democratic-leaning, said he voted for Trump in 2016.

In the past, the hedge fund manager expressed his wishful thinking of having JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon as the Democratic Party candidate, although the latter has been tightlipped about his political ambitions. Ackman also backed Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) to become the Democratic nominee but the Congressman quit the race in early March.

Incidentally, in September, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) raised the specter of Democrats nominating an alternative candidate at their national convention in Chicago in August. The most troubling scenario would be if “kingmakers jettison Joe Biden and parachute in Michelle Obama,” Cruz said. “I view this as a very serious danger,” he added.

The results of the Pew Research Center’s poll released last week showed that about 49% of the registered voters said if they could decide the major party candidates for the 2024 election, they would replace both Biden and Trump on the ballot.
