Barclays PLC (NYSE: BCS) reported upbeat underlying first-half profit.Barclays' adjusted pretax profit for the period rose to £4.23 billion ($6.63 billion), from £3.73 billion, in the year-earlier period. However, analysts were expecting a profit of £3.8 billion. Barclays' attributable net profit declined to £70 million pounds, versus £1.5 bilion. Its net interest income fell to £6.11 billion from £6.19 billion.Barclays shares closed at $9.69 yesterday.
