Keeping up with federal tax laws is now the number one concern of solo practitioners and smaller firms, knocking client retention off the top spot, according to a recent AIPCA survey.
This is not a surprising development, said Sue Anderson, CPE Link executive director: “With tax laws constantly shifting, it's tough to get a firm grasp on them. It's no wonder that keeping up with tax changes has risen to the top of the charts.”
One example of a murky tax area that practitioners must navigate involves unmarried couples who cohabitate. A letter from 74 members of the House Representatives to IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman urged that the IRS move fast to settle “serious issues” faced by domestic partners and same-sex couples, many of whom still aren't sure how to pay their 2010 taxes!
