5G-Crosshaul was a Horizon 2020 5GPPP project consisting of a consortium of 20 of the world's leading global technology players, including InterDigital, Ericsson, Nokia, NEC, Orange, Telefonica and Telecom Italia. The consortium was selected in 2015 to develop what has become the de-facto concept for the 5G integrated fronthaul/backhaul transport network.

The 5G-Crosshaul transport network established a new approach for integrating backhaul and fronthaul transport networks under a common NFV/SDN resource fabric. This is achieved through the implementation of a control infrastructure using a unified, abstract network model for control plane integration and a unified data plane encompassing innovative high-capacity transmission technologies, as well as novel deterministic-latency switch architectures.
