DETROIT, Jan. 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Michigan's winter heating season is upon us, and with the recent snow, DTE Energy reminds its gas customers to keep their meters clear of ice and snow.
Snow and ice buildup on your natural gas meter may result in damage and can interfere with proper operation, potentially causing a gas leak.

In order to read and service meters for both daily operations and emergency situations, DTE technicians need to have proper access. To ensure continued, reliable and safe service, customers can help DTE by:
- Keeping a path to meters open and clear of snow
- Removing ice and snow from gas meters by hand, brush or broom. Do not use sharp objects, salt, ice melting chemicals or hot water to remove snow and ice
- Being careful using a shovel, snow blower or snow plow when clearing snow and ice near your gas meter
- Looking up and removing ice hazards from roof edges above gas meters to prevent icicles from falling and striking DTE employees
When you shovel your walk, take a few minutes to check and clear your gas meter. It will provide peace of mind all winter long.
