This afternoon, President Obama spoke briefly about the
departure
of Hosni Mubarak. Obama said that it was the moral force that bent the arc of history toward justice in Egypt, not violence. “[Their] voices have been heard and Egypt will never be the same,” Obama said, adding that by stepping down, Mubarak has answered his nation's hunger for change. “The U.S. will continue to be a friend and partner to Egypt – we stand ready to provide whatever assistance is necessary and asked for,” he said. Obama also spoke of the pivotal role that Egyptians have played in human history, and discussed how their world is forever changed. “We saw mothers, fathers carrying their children on their shoulders to show them what true democracy might look like,” he said. “We saw protesters chant, ‘We are peaceful!' again and again. We saw doctors and nurses running into the streets to help. “Above all, we saw a new generation emerge – a generation that uses its own creativity and talent and technology to call for a government that answers their hopes and not their fears. A government that is boundless to their aspirations.” “Most people have discovered these past few days that they are worth something,” Obama continued. “And this cannot be taken away from them. Ever. This is the power of human dignity.”
