Fortune 500: This Year's Top 10 Companies

For the past 62 years, Fortune has released its list of the top 500 companies, dubbed the "Fortune 500."

When combined, the 500 companies represent two-thirds of the U.S. GDP and boast $12 trillion in revenues, $840 billion in profits, $17 trillion in market capitalization and employ near 28 million people worldwide.

Companies are ranked by their total revenues and must be incorporated in the United States and file their financial statements with a U.S. governmental agency. Private companies that submit a 10-k or comparable regulatory document are also included in the ranking.

Here are the top 10 companies in the new Fortune 500 list based on their revenue.

  • 5. McKesson Corporation MCK: $181.24 billion
  • 6. UnitedHealth Group Inc UNH: $157.11 billion
  • 7. CVS Health Corp CVS: $153.29 billion
  • 8. General Motors Company GM: $152.36 billion
  • 9. Ford Motor Company F: $149.56 billion
  • 10. AT&T Inc. T: $146.8 billion
