Here's Why Cummins Stock Moved With Fiat Chrysler Amid New EPA Allegations

Cummins Inc. CMI shares fell 2.2 percent on Thursday after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency accused engine-consumer Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV FCAU of allowing excess diesel emissions in 104,000 vehicles.

However, Cummins claims not to have played any role in the production of the vehicles in question.

A company spokesperson told Benzinga that Cummins supplies only the 6.7-liter engine for Dodge Ram trucks — not the 3.0-liter engine for the trucks and SUVs under investigation.

Fiat Chrysler shares were halted after the EPA announcement, but Cummins remained live and experienced a swift decline. Values have since rallied to rest about 1.68 percent down on the day.

Late last year, owners of Dodge and Ram trucks sued Fiat Chrysler and Cummins for allegedly equipping the vehicles with software designed to cheat on emissions tests.

The plaintiffs argued that the software prevents regulators from seeing the engines' true emissions which exceed the legal limits.
