Why Jason Calacanis, Tesla's First Model S Owner, Isn't Worried About Deliveries

Jason Calacanis has worked with technology firms since the dot-com era as an entrepreneur and angel investor in many technology startups. One of his biggest deals consisted of selling Weblogs to AOL in 2005. Calacanis is also best known for taking delivery of a

sedan with a serial number "00001." In other words, Calacanis is technically the first Model S owner on record. Calacanis isn't a Wall Street guru or stock analyst but certainly knows a thing or two about technology companies and cars. Benzinga reached out to him to comment on Tesla's second quarter delivery figures in which the company delivered 14,370 vehicles - short of its own projects of 17,000 vehicles. Related Link:

Calacanis pointed out that the mix of cars that Tesla sold is "very interesting." Specifically, Tesla delivered 9,745 Model S sedans and 4,625 Model X SUVs, implying that the Model X represents roughly one-third of all sales. Calacanis continued and said Tesla's next vehicle line, the Model 3, will be 50 percent less complex than the Model S and 100 percent less complex than the Model X. If this turns out to be the case, he suggested that Tesla's ultimate goal of delivering up to 500,000 vehicles per year "seems highly probable" over the next 3 years.
