NBC's Renewal Of 'Superstore' A Good Sign For Comcast Investors

For shareholders in Comcast Corporation CMCSA, NBC's comedy slate has been nothing to laugh at it the last few years.

While the network's drama roster has been incredibly strong, it has seemingly wiped the slate clean every year on the comedy side and hasn't been able to launch a new laugher to replace outgoing hits like "The Office" and "Parks & Recreation."

On Tuesday, NBC gave some signs of hope its prospects in that genre could turn around as "Superstore" got picked up for a second season. While "Superstore" likely won't be traveling down the same Emmy-nominated road as "Office" or "Parks," its numbers are still impressive for what they are: A self-starter forced to survive during the dead of winter.

The network's highest-rated new comedy over the last two seasons, "Superstore," debuted with a double-pump of episodes following "The Voice" and has since survived as the night's lead-in and "Voice"-less.

With an average of 7 million viewers and consistently hitting around the 2.0 rating mark in the 18-49 demographic (all with time-shifted date incorporated), the series starring America Ferrera and Ben Feldman has surprised critics that initially wrote it off.

"Superstore" joins "Blindspot" and "Chicago PD" as the only network rookies to have already earned a season two pickup. No decision has been made yet on its lead-out "Telenovela" which has struggled to keep the "Superstore" audience.
