What TD Ameritrade Investors Bought And Sold Last Month
TD Ameritrade released its monthly Investor Movement Index, showing that its clients were "strong net buyers" of equities in July. TD said that clients also increased their equity exposure during the month. Popular amongst the buys were oil producers and stocks that have performed well for much of the year.
Buying
Among the oil names, clients were fond of ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP), Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE: XOM), Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX) and Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE: CHK). All of those stocks performed poorly for the month, with Exxon dropping the least at 4.8 percent. Chesapeake Energy, which suspended its dividend during the month, dipped 22.5 percent.
In the technology sector, investors were fond of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) and Facebook Inc (NASDAQ: FB). Netflix gained nearly 22 percent in July, while Facebook saw a 10 percent gain. Apple, which faced challenges following its earnings report, dipped 3.3 percent.
Across other industries, TD reported that clients also purchased Walt Disney Co (NYSE: DIS), Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MU) and Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ: GILD). Of those, Disney gained 5 percent, while Gilead was flat and Micron shed 1.8 percent.
Selling
On the sell side, investors sold a range of companies across sectors. Those included Google Inc (NASDAQ: GOOG) (up 20 percent), Citigroup Inc (NYSE: C) (up 6 percent), Mastercard Inc (NYSE: MA) (up 4 percent), and General Electric Company (NYSE: GE) (down 1.8 percent).
TD noted that investors were also spooked by worries on the Chinese economy, selling Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (NYSE: BABA). That stock moved nearly 5 percent lower through the month and has now declined nearly 25 percent this year.
Investors also sold stakes in Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) (up 7.5 percent), Sirius XM Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: SIRI) (up 6 percent) and Bank of America Corp (NYSE: BAC) (up 5 percent).
