That crisis is coming as the result of a full-blown regional war in the Middle East.</p> <p>Not knowing anything other than that, one would expect oil (given the fundamentals of the situation) would be expected to be in the $150 area and neutral reserve assets like gold should be strong, the stock market to be down massively and Bitcoin, not-yet widely adopted as a neutral reserve asset, would likely be quite weak given its high beta to stocks.</p> <p><strong>But that's not what we've seen</strong></p> <p>Gold, arguably what should be the <em>strongest</em>, is actually the weakest. What does it mean?</h2> <p>Let's start with gold, as it's probably the most counter-intuitive in terms of performance, and the reason for its sell-off is still not widely understood-</p> <p>Remember that the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are all <em>huge</em> surplus countries. Some current accounts in the GCC are a whopping 20% of GDP. But those earning high income don't feel the pinch quite like those earning low income.</p> <p>"For low-income consumers, spending on essentials, including energy and food, is a larger share of both their total spending and their income," Morgan Stanley economists wrote last month. "As of the most recent Consumer Expenditure Survey from 2024, energy spend made up 8.2% of total spending for the bottom 20% income cohort compared to 4.8% for the top. The contract settled at 6,624, essentially flat. The VIX barely moved. And yet, beneath the surface, the options market was screaming a single message: this isn’t over.</p> <p>That mechanical close masked what institutional derivatives positioning was actually saying about the weeks ahead. With crude oil above $112, the Strait of Hormuz disrupted, Non-Farm Payrolls dropping into a three-day weekend with zero hedging ability, and dealer gamma deeply negative, the S&P 500 has entered a phase where oil prices matter more than anything coming out of earnings season. The data behind that thesis is worth examining closely.</p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">The $112 Problem</h2> <p>The Strait of Hormuz has been effectively disrupted since the start of the Iran conflict. Iran prepared a monitoring pact with Oman, requiring shipping tolls. The USS Ford carrier repositioned to rejoin operations. A drone struck Iraq’s Trebil border crossing. None of this is de-escalation.</p> <p>Crude at $112 isn’t contained to energy stocks. It feeds into consumer inflation expectations, manufacturing input costs, and transportation margins within weeks. Chicago Fed President Goolsbee called the oil price rise “quite serious” on April 2 and warned that extended increases would show up in inflation expectations, the scenario the Fed fears most because it forces them to hold rates steady while the economy weakens underneath.</p> <p>Put simply, $112 oil is repricing the entire rate-cut timeline for the second half of 2026. Initial Jobless Claims came in at 202K versus 212K expected on the same day, showing the labor market still healthy enough that the Fed has no urgency to ease.
