Fresh off of the Stocktoberfest conference in San Diego, California, StockTwits Co-Founder and CEO Howard Lindzon recently joined Benzinga’s #PreMarket Prep to talk about what features might lie ahead in the future of the financial social media platform.
Lindzon said “it’s just a matter of time” before StockTwits expands its platform into different languages. What makes it difficult is that certain countries will use numbers for companies instead of tickers, he explained. He said getting the data could be an issue as well.
“The hobby of stocks is a very American thing,” Lindzon said.
In some countries, Lindzon explained, markets aren’t as evolved or focus on other types of trading. He gave the example of London, where binary options are more of the norm. Other countries, like Japan, use a much different language for company tickers.
“I think eventually, we will get there,” Lindzon said. “But right now, we have more than enough demand in the United States, and we’re only a small team.”
Video content might also be in the future of StockTwits. Lindzon said he is bullish on video, but not on creating content.
“For context, video can matter. But what are the odds that someone great can really create and produce and share good, consistent video content?” he said.
He also said some app ideas for video are in the works, but it will be “more around created content just like a message for the stream.” The content wouldn’t be created by StockTwits, but by the community around it.
Lindzon also talked about Stocktoberfest and how StockTwits was started.
