Despite presidential candidates squabbling over the economic squeeze on family finances, American homeowners are slowly increasing the amount of money they've put into their homes. American homeowners now own 41.20% of their homes, on average. This is up by 2.72% from a year ago, according to FindTheHome data on homes with outstanding mortgages.

Homeowners in Hawaii have the most money tied up in home equity, at 55.47% of their equity percentage. Bringing up the rear are Alaskan homeowners, who only own 36.10% of their homes.
