Cohen &amp; Steers, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CNS#NYSE">CNS</a>) has offered and sold 1,007,057 shares of its common stock (the &quot;Shares&quot;) through its &quot;at-the-market&quot; equity offering program (the &quot;ATM Program&quot;). The Shares were offered and sold through BofA Securities, as sales agent, at an average price per share of $69.60. The expected net proceeds to Cohen &amp; Steers, after deducting commissions and estimated offering expenses, are approximately $68.4 million.

A popular asset allocation strategy promoted by hedge funds, including&nbsp;Bridgewater Associates&#8216;&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/ray-dalio" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ray Dalio</a>, is reportedly facing investor redemptions after underperforming promises.
What Happened:&nbsp;Bridgewater and other hedge funds promised superior returns with their &#8220;risk-parity portfolios,&#8221; but after half a decade of subpar performance, investors are pulling their money out, Bloomberg&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://news.bloomberglaw.com/capital-markets/ray-dalios-famous-trade-is-sputtering-and-investors-are-bailing" rel="noreferrer noopener">reported</a>.&nbsp;
Large investors, including public pension funds in New Mexico, Oregon, and Ohio, have withdrawn their investments, leading to a $70 billion decline in these funds from their peak three years ago. This comes despite reassurances from hedge funds that things could improve in the next decade.
Risk parity was successful only during the Great Financial Crisis of 2008-09 and &#8220;that was really its heyday,&#8221; said Eileen Neill, as per the report, whose firm advises New Mexico&#8217;s $17 billion worth of public employee pension.
Since 2019, risk-parity funds have consistently underperformed the standard 60/40 global stock-bond mix, according to a broad industry index, as per the report. This lackluster performance has led to a significant investor exodus, with Verus estimates compiled from eVestment data showing a drop in risk-parity fund assets from a peak of $160 billion in 2021 to roughly $90 billion by the end of 2023.
What Is Risk-Parity?&nbsp;A&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/22/09/29068486/2022-made-sure-even-risk-parity-strategies-dont-work-this-etf-lost-over-28-this-year" rel="noreferrer noopener">risk-parity portfolio</a>, according to a University of Massachusetts Amherst paper, &#8220;defines a well-diversified portfolio as one where all asset classes have the same marginal contribution to the total risk of the portfolio.&#8221; This approach prioritizes risk management over chasing high returns and involves portfolio rebalancing and leverage.
Unlike traditional 60/40 stock-to-bond portfolios, risk-parity focuses on risk distribution rather than dollar amounts invested in each asset class.
The risk-parity portfolio was first launched in 1996 to manage Dalio&#8217;s trust assets, as per Bloomberg, and was lauded as a way to &#8220;use deep economic research to craft the best possible portfolio, instead of trying to call the next big thing.&#8221;
Instead of taking on high risk in a bid to chase superior returns, the approach propounded diversification across an array of assets such as commodities and bonds, with each as an equal driver of the portfolio&#8217;s volatility.

Defenders Of The Strategy:&nbsp;Proponents of the strategy argue that exiting now, with stocks at record highs, is a &#8220;classic investor error.&#8221; Bridgewater claims its &#8220;All Weather&#8221; fund that targets 10% volatility may be underperforming currently, but believes risk-parity remains superior for long-term investing, especially with potential stagnation in stock gains.
The &#8220;All Weather&#8221; iteration fell 22% in 2022, with&nbsp;Michael Markov&nbsp;of Markov Processes<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/22/09/29068486/2022-made-sure-even-risk-parity-strategies-dont-work-this-etf-lost-over-28-this-year" rel="noreferrer noopener">&nbsp;blaming the underperformance</a>&nbsp;on it being less reactive to short-term market swings and correlation changes.
Risk-parity funds also face stiff competition from private credit funds and top hedge funds with consistent returns. 
Michael Shackelford, chief investment officer at the Public Employees Retirement Association of New Mexico, reportedly said, &#8220;If I'm going to have 6% or 8% of my portfolio in something else, I'd rather that something else be a bucket of really good performing hedge funds.&#8221;
Investors should focus on future performance, argued&nbsp;Jordan Brooks&nbsp;of&nbsp;AQR Capital Management, whose firm manages $13.7 billion in risk-parity investments. &#8220;It's investors' job at the end of the day not to look backward but forward to what's the best portfolio to navigate the next decade,&#8221; he said.
The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), an exchange-traded fund that mirrors the S&amp;P 500 Index, ended Monday&#8217;s session up 0.92% at $499.72, according to <a href="https://benzinga.grsm.io/lxquj26b2sag" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Benzinga Pro</a> data. The RPAR Risk Parity ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RPAR#NYSE">RPAR</a>) closed the previous session 0.16% lower at $18.63 and is down over 5% over the past year.

Why It Matters: The long-term viability of Social Security is a major concern for many Americans. They <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/24/03/37541461/working-into-your-70s-nikki-haleys-bold-proposal-for-retirement-age">worry about its ability</a> to disburse full benefits in the future. According to the Social Security and Medicare Trustees Reports, by 2033 the fund will only be able to disburse 77% of the total scheduled benefits.
BlackRock CEO Larry Fink last month <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/03/37936320/larry-fink-warns-of-us-retirement-crisis-in-blackrocks-annual-letter-you-are-on-your-own">emphasized the urgency</a> of addressing the global &#8220;retirement crisis.&#8221; With medical advancements extending life expectancy, traditional approaches to retirement savings and working patterns may need significant reform.
While concerns exist, there&#8217;s also optimism. A <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/24/03/37919337/half-of-americans-now-optimistic-about-social-securitys-future-data-shows">2023 Gallup survey</a> shows that &#8220;Americans are more optimistic about the future of Social Security than they have been in recent years.&#8221; Among nonretired Americans, 50% expect to receive benefits, compared to 47% who don&#8217;t.
As of 2024, the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/financial-advisors/24/01/36758328/this-is-the-age-most-americans-retire-and-how-to-know-whether-youre-on-track-">average retirement age</a> for retirees in the U.S. is 64, with workers expecting to retire at 66. The CNN Money Fear and Greed index showed some improvement in the overall market sentiment, while the index remained in the &#8220;Fear&#8221; zone on Monday.
U.S. stocks closed higher on Monday, with the S&amp;P 500 snapping a six-session losing streak.
On the economic data front, the Chicago Fed National Activity Index increased to +0.15 in March versus a revised reading of +0.09 in the previous month, topping market estimates of +0.09.
Shares of Zions Bancorporation, N.A. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ZION#NASDAQ">ZION</a>) gained around 4% on Monday after the company reported upbeat earnings for its first quarter. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VZ#NYSE">VZ</a>) stock fell around 5% on Monday after it reported fiscal first-quarter 2024 results.
All sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed higher, with financial, utilities, and information technology stocks recording the biggest gains on Monday.
The Dow Jones closed higher by around 254 points to 38,239.98 on Monday. The S&amp;P 500 rose 0.87% at 5,010.60, while the Nasdaq Composite climbed 1.11% at 15,451.31 during Monday's session.
Investors are awaiting earnings results from Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>), General Motors Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>), Visa Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/V#NYSE">V</a>) and PepsiCo, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PEP#NASDAQ">PEP</a>) today.

With U.S. stock futures trading slightly lower this morning on Tuesday, here are some stocks that may grab investor focus today:

Hours after reports of Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/04/38361822/tesla-layoffs-hit-marketing-team-retracts-advertising-push">laying off its marketing team</a> in the U.S., CEO Elon Musk said the ads made by the team failed to impress him.
What Happened: The CEO concurred with an X user and Tesla enthusiast who said the ads made by the team were rather unimpressive and wrote, &#8220;Exactly. The ads were far too generic – could've been any car.&#8221;

Musk&#8217;s comment comes on the heel of a Bloomberg report that the EV giant has removed its newly formed marketing team as part of the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/04/38244436/breaking-tesla-said-to-be-laying-off-over-14-000-employees">10% companywide layoff </a>announced last week. The report noted that the entirety of the team in the U.S., including senior manager Alex Ingram, were eliminated. 
Trial And Error: Musk first expressed <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/23/05/32439283/tesla-bulls-cheer-elon-musks-decision-to-try-some-advertising-it-could-be-amazingly">willingness to try traditional advertising</a> less than a year ago in May 2023. Until then, the company boasted of spending almost no money on advertising but became popular purely via word of mouth.
Since then, Tesla has attempted advertising on different platforms including YouTube, X, and even Meta Platforms&#8217; Instagram, and Facebook <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/03/37908129/facebook-isnt-lame-for-musk-anymore-tesla-rejoins-zuckerbergs-social-media-platform-after-ghosting-i">despite Musk&#8217;s past criticism of them</a>. 
However, in January, Tesla executives clarified during the fourth-quarter earnings call that while the lack of awareness impacted EV adoption, the company would not spend too much on advertising and marketing but instead spend it in areas and geographies where the company has low market share such as Japan. 
Analyst Take: Not all Tesla analysts favor this strategy of low advertising investment. The Future Fund Managing Partner Gary Black has often criticized Tesla&#8217;s attempts at driving sales via price cuts that weigh heavily on the company&#8217;s margins. Black recommends advertising instead. 
Even on Monday, Black reiterated that educating combustion engine vehicle owners on the perks of EVs via advertising is &#8220;badly needed&#8221; to drive sales. &#8220;Anyone can cut price. It's a blunt inefficient tool,&#8221; Black added. 
Anti-Tesla Advertising: While Musk has been sidestepping advertising, anti-Tesla crusaders have been going all in. 
The Dawn Project, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/23/10/35125361/exclusive-dawn-projects-dan-odowd-warns-teslas-terrible-fsd-could-be-banned-blames-musk-for-coordina" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">founded by tech billionaire</a> Dan O'Dowd, released two ads at the Super Bowl championship earlier this year alleging that Tesla failed to act despite the group flagging multiple concerns about the safety of its full self-driving (FSD) driver assistance software and urged for a boycott of the company.
"When you buy a new Tesla you are financing and enabling Elon Musk to put a dangerous, unfinished, product on our public roads," O'Dowd <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/02/37085404/tesla-boycott-superbowl-ad-earns-regulators-ire-did-not-grant-permission-to-use-the-ntsb-seal">said in a statement</a> then.
