Meta Platforms Stock Chart Flashes Uncertain Signals Ahead Of Q1 Earnings

"That menu is certainly critical," John Hartmann  CEO of Ascend Wellness Holdings (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAWH#OTC">AAWH</a>) said to those gathered at the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/events/cannabis-conference/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference</a> in Florida on April 16-17 in a conversation about how to best attract retail consumers. 
"They&#8217;re&nbsp;looking for&nbsp;variety in the products,"&nbsp;he continued."And so whether&nbsp;that&#8217;s&nbsp;the strength of the THC or the terpene component, or whether&nbsp;it&#8217;s&nbsp;a different form factor. I think having a really well-balanced menu that meets the needs of a variety of customers is something&nbsp;we&#8217;re&nbsp;focused&nbsp;on."&nbsp;
Hartmann joined three other industry experts &#8211; Kyle Sherman, founder &amp; CEO of Flowhub, Jon Lowen, co-CEO of Surfside Solutions Inc. and Ankur Rungta, co-founder and CEO of C3 Industries. The panel, "Is your retail experience what consumers are really looking for?" was moderated by Rachel Wright managing partner at 420 CPA and host of Highly Capitalized Network News Highly Capitalized. 
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Value Points, Tech &amp; Consistency&nbsp;</h2>
The head of a vertically integrated cannabis company with a national presence, Rungta, highlighted that nowadays&nbsp;"consumers&nbsp;are very, very value-focused,"&nbsp;and value points include not only the right high-quality&nbsp;products,&nbsp;but also&nbsp;"pricing, assortment, and promo strategy."&nbsp;He added it is&nbsp;important&nbsp;to make the offering exciting for all different types of consumers.
For Sherman, a CEO of the cannabis retail and payments platform for dispensaries nationwide, the tech is crucial.&nbsp;"It&#8217;s&nbsp;funny tech is such a behind-the-scenes thing, right?"&nbsp;he asked.&nbsp;"It&#8217;s&nbsp;pretty easy to forget that."&nbsp;
Sherman stressed that tech is really important, all the way from the first moment that a consumer walks into a store and they get their ID scanned. He was touring around the country and found out that in some dispensaries it takes 10 minutes to check in, which could make some customers wonder why they would go back there. Next to the check-in process is the experience of interacting with the budtender, which is also a point where tech can help, as it can provide the budtender with a lot of information on the customer's purchasing habits. 
Wright pointed out that consistency is also another important detail to keep the customers in addition to the efficiency of time. Customers like to have consistent experiences in the same stores at different locations.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Focusing On The Lion's Share Of Revenue</h2>
Lowen, who is at the helm of a marijuana-focused provider of marketing and data solutions, followed up by saying it is important to use technology for communication. If these customers love flower or pre-rolls, when they walk in they should see flower and pre-rolls.
"We want those product listings to show up first," Lowen said. "We want those products that they&#8217;re the most interested in based on maybe previous exposure to different purchases or interests that they&#8217;ve shown up from a data perspective so that we can create this continuous flow of communication and content." 
Rungta followed up by saying that&nbsp;"every store has its own unique sort of customer base and demographics and purchasing&nbsp;habits,"&nbsp;and that it is&nbsp;really&nbsp;hard&nbsp;to generalize even across a single state, let alone across a whole business.&nbsp;His business is seeing 80% of sales coming from 20% of its customers,&nbsp;and those customers&nbsp;are buying certain products like&nbsp;flower.
It is&nbsp;important&nbsp;to focus on the&nbsp;lion's&nbsp;share of the revenue, Rungta said,&nbsp;adding&nbsp;"The more you try to generalize in this space, the more&nbsp;you're&nbsp;going to struggle from a performance standpoint."
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Information Overload&nbsp;</h2>
Hartmann explained that there are three types of customers – very experienced who know what they want, the ones who enjoy the community of the dispensary and the third group is the newest, comprised of people who want to learn. Those new ones, however, could end up representing 80% of your sales, "but they need some education sometimes hand-holding." 
Rungta cautioned that a lot of customers are dealing with &#8220;information overload," especially very competitive markets, and are getting bombarded with advertisements. The businesses should try to declutter that information to cut through the noise. 
Harmann added about another important factor – getting customer feedback, concluding "it's all about the customer."

Back in the last decade, I told anyone who would listen about the great news of Alibaba stock (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/baba-stock-quote/">BABA</a>). <a href="https://investorplace.com/2019/11/alibaba-the-most-profitable-company-in-the-world/">I even bought some shares. </a>



Alibaba was one of China&rsquo;s three &ldquo;Cloud Emperors.&rdquo; Its hyperscaled data centers, like those of Tencent (OTCMKTS:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/tcehy-stock-quote/">TCEHY</a>) and Baidu (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/bidu-stock-quote/">BIDU</a>), were serious threats to Amazon (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/amzn-stock-quote/">AMZN</a>), Microsoft (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/msft-stock-quote/">MSFT</a>), and Alphabet (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/googl-stock-quote/">GOOGL</a>, NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/goog-stock-quote/">GOOG</a>) in the cloud.



Now Alibaba stock is down 60% from 5 years ago and I wouldn&rsquo;t touch it with a barge pole. It&rsquo;s a story America and its tech investors should be very glad for.



<h2>The Empire Strikes Back</h2>



Chinese dictator Xi Jinping decided that technology was a threat to his regime. <a href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/beijings-regulatory-crackdown-wipes-11-trln-off-chinese-big-tech-2023-07-12/">He cracked down on the industry </a>in favor of car companies like Nio (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/nio-stock-quote/">NIO</a>). A manufacturing workforce is a compliant one. Tech workers ask questions.



Some of Xi&rsquo;s actions might be applauded by American liberals. Higher taxes, an end to monopoly, and taking responsibility for what&rsquo;s online are common political demands here. But Xi went further, <a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Markets/Triple-woes-weigh-on-Alibaba-Tencent-and-other-Chinese-tech-titans">demanding that technology serve him</a>, not the market and not the people.



The result was predictable. I would have predicted it<a href="https://investorplace.com/2021/08/look-past-the-meddling-it-makes-no-sense-for-china-to-keep-alibaba-down/"> if I thought</a> Xi really would kill his economy to retain absolute power. I was wrong. In this case, American conservatives were right.



The three years since the crackdown haven&rsquo;t just cost China $1.1 trillion in market cap. They&rsquo;ve let America lap China&rsquo;s whole economy. China has missed the AI boom because, like all tech innovations, AI rides on the minds of empowered talent. Freedom is the price of competing in technology. If you want people to think differently you first must allow them to think freely.



<h2>Ma Comes Back</h2>



In the crackdown, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/11/04/tech/ant-ipo-beijing-china-intl-hnk/index.html">Alibaba co-founder Jack Ma was Xi&rsquo;s bete noir</a>. Once China&rsquo;s wealthiest man, Ma was driven from the country, eventually taking a position with <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/02/business/jack-ma-visiting-professor-japan-university-intl-hnk/index.html">Tokyo University</a>.



Ma still visits China. He&rsquo;s still a name. The stock jumped just this week after he praised the company&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/04/10/alibaba-founder-jack-ma-re-emerges-with-praise-of-transformations.html">reorganization</a>. To hide itself from Xi&rsquo;s wrath, Alibaba is <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/03/28/alibaba-says-it-will-split-into-6-units-that-can-raise-funds-and-ipo.html">splitting itself</a> into six pieces. But even Alibaba insiders weren&rsquo;t fooled. CEO Daniel Zhang <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/06/20/alibaba-announces-eddie-wu-to-succeed-daniel-zhang-as-ceo.html">quit</a>.



Ma&rsquo;s remarks praising management gave Alibaba stock a brief boost. But the stock is flat for 2024, down 26% over the last year. The company is not what it was. Even in e-commerce, Alibaba is being lapped by Pinduoduo (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/pdd-stock-quote/">PDD</a>), whose Temu site offers cheap, customized goods from a network of online sweatshops.



Alibaba is distracted by the government and its internal turmoil. It is missing the entrepreneurship that once made it great. Sales for 2023 were down from 2022. Profit growth has stalled, and the company has missed several profit estimates.



Ma wants Alibaba to <a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Companies/Jack-Ma-memo-backs-Alibaba-reforms-urges-staff-to-grasp-AI-opportunity">&ldquo;grasp the opportunity of AI,&rdquo;</a> focusing their efforts on customers. Mistakes were made, he says, but Alibaba is now more <a href="https://www.scmp.com/business/china-business/article/3258442/jack-ma-steps-mistakes-brouhaha-boost-alibabas-morale-urges-staff-embrace-change-and-prepare-ai">&ldquo;simple and agile.&rdquo; </a>



Fine words, but China&rsquo;s smartest people aren&rsquo;t fooled. They&rsquo;re voting against Xi with their feet, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/chinas-brain-drain-threatens-its-future-dbe38096">taking their talent and money with them. </a>



<h2>The Bottom Line</h2>



The gating factor to growth in our time isn&rsquo;t resources like oil, or simple manufacturing prowess, as it was a century ago.



It&rsquo;s people. Trained, empowered, and free minds are the gating factor to growth today. The more talent you can attract, and the more security you can give them, in their work and in their life, the more money you can make.



Alibaba stock can&rsquo;t deliver that because Xi Jinping won&rsquo;t let it. American policymakers are fighting a tariff war, seeking to limit China&rsquo;s access to AI chips. But that isn&rsquo;t why we&rsquo;re winning this Cold War.



Freedom is what&rsquo;s winning this Cold War. Xi won&rsquo;t allow it, Ma can&rsquo;t grant it, and Alibaba is stuck as a result.

Despite facing several challenges, China's economy shows signs of resurgence driven by several stimulus measures undertaken by the authorities to boost its economy. Although property sales continue to disappoint, a recovery in consumer spending and a rise in domestic demand will likely contribute to economic growth. Given this backdrop, let's explore the investment potential of China stocks JD.com (JD) and PDD Holdings (PDD). Keep reading... China is aiming to boost economic growth through a series of stimulus measures to revive manufacturing, consumption, and foreign investments. Amid this backdrop, investors could consider buying fundamentally strong China stocks JD.com, Inc. (<a href="https://stocknews.com/stock/JD/">JD</a>) and PDD Holdings Inc. (<a href="https://stocknews.com/stock/PDD/">PDD</a>).
Despite facing challenges such as a weak property market, weaker spending, loss of consumer confidence, rising local debt, and high youth unemployment, the higher-than-expected first-quarter economic growth of <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/china/chinas-q1-gdp-grows-faster-than-expected-policy-support-2024-04-16/">5.3%</a> brings optimism for China's 2024 GDP target of around 5%.
China's growth outlook looks positive as it is expected to be fueled by strong domestic consumption and investments. Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Zhao Leji, believes that China's import and export of goods will exceed <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/china/chinas-economy-will-provide-strong-driving-force-world-recovery-2024-03-28/">$32 trillion in the next five years</a>.
China's consumption shows signs of resurgence with retail sales of consumer goods in the first quarter rising <a href="http://english.scio.gov.cn/pressroom/2024-04/16/content_117129020.htm">4.7% year-over-year</a>. Meanwhile, online retail sales increased 12.4% year-over-year. Although consumer spending will likely grow moderately in the second quarter, it will likely <a href="https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202404/1310676.shtml">accelerate in the second half</a>.
Considering these encouraging trends, let's discuss the fundamentals of the two <a href="https://stocknews.com/category/china/">China</a> stock picks, starting with the second choice.
Stock #2: JD.com, Inc. (<a href="https://stocknews.com/stock/JD/">JD</a>)
JD provides supply chain-based technologies and services in the People's Republic of China. The company offers computers, communication, and consumer electronics products, as well as home appliances and general merchandise products.
In terms of forward non-GAAP P/E, JD's 8.03x is 46.1% lower than the 14.89x industry average. Its 4.94x forward <a href="https://www.investopedia.com/terms/e/ev-ebitda.asp">EV/EBITDA</a> is 46.5% lower than the 9.23x industry average. Likewise, its 6.94x forward EV/EBIT is 47.6% lower than the 13.24x industry average.
For the fiscal fourth quarter, which ended on December 31, 2023, JD's total net revenues increased 3.6% from the prior-year quarter to RMB306.08 billion ($42.28 billion). Its non-GAAP income from operations rose 7.5% year-over-year to RMB7.79 billion ($1.08 billion).
For the same quarter, the company's non-GAAP net income attributable to the company's ordinary shareholders amounted to RMB8.42 billion ($1.16 billion) and RMB5.30 per ADS, up 9.9% and 10.2% from the year-ago value, respectively.
Street expects JD's revenue for the quarter ended March 31, 2024, to increase 1.7% year-over-year to $35.58 billion. Its EPS for the quarter ending June 30, 2024, is expected to grow 3.9% year-over-year to $0.77. It surpassed the Street EPS estimates in each of the trailing four quarters. Over the past three months, the stock has gained 2.9% to close the last trading session at $25.42.

PDD is a multinational commerce group that owns and operates a portfolio of businesses. It operates Pinduoduo, an e-commerce platform that offers products in various categories, and Temu, an online marketplace.
In terms of forward non-GAAP PEG, PDD's 0.57x is 60.9% lower than the 1.45x industry average. Its 9.48x forward EV/EBIT is 28.4% lower than the 13.24x industry average. Additionally, its 13.48x forward non-GAAP P/E is 9.5% lower than the 14.89x industry average.
PDD's revenues for the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2023, increased 123.2% year-over-year to RMB88.88 billion ($12.28 billion). Its non-GAAP operating profit increased 111.9% from the year-ago value to RMB24.58 billion ($3.40 billion).
The company's non-GAAP profit attributable to ordinary shareholders rose 110.4% year-over-year to RMB25.48 billion ($3.52 million). Also, its non-GAAP earnings per ADS stood at RMB17.32, up 107.7% from the year-ago value.
For the quarter ended March 31, 2024, PDD's EPS and revenue are expected to increase 48.2% and 98.2% year-over-year to $1.45 and $10.56 billion, respectively. It surpassed the consensus EPS estimates in each of the trailing four quarters. Over the past year, PDD's stock has gained 68.9% to close the last trading session at $114.29.
