Litecoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/ltc/usd">LTC</a>) surged as one of the market's biggest gainers Thursday after the Nasdaq stock exchange submitted a request to the SEC to list a spot exchange-traded fund tracking the coin's price.
What happened: The exchange submitted a 19b-4 <a href="https://listingcenter.nasdaq.com/assets/rulebook/nasdaq/filings/SR-NASDAQ-2025-005.pdf">application </a>with the regulator to list shares of an ETF applied by digital asset trading firm Canary Capital.
The filing of the 19b-4 document marks the second step in the ETF approval process, which followed Canary Capital&#8217;s amended S-1 registration application on Wednesday. According to the rules, the SEC has 240 days to deny or approve the 19b-4 application.
Responding to the filing, leading ETF analyst Eric Balchunas said that Litecoin ETF has "all the boxes checked" and is set to become the first altcoin ETF of 2025.

The development spurred a 12% rally in LTC, a coin created from the hard fork of Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>). The proof-of-work cryptocurrency witnessed a 50% jump in trading volumes to $2.34 billion.
LTC was up over 22% year-to-date, as excitement around its potential ETF reached a fever peak.
Also dubbed the &#8220;digital silver&#8221; to Bitcoin&#8217;s gold, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/05/38690567/this-bitcoin-offshoot-tops-digital-payments-escapes-sec-scrutiny-but-remains-undervalued-t">Litecoin is widely seen as a commodity</a> and has escaped scrutiny from U.S. regulators.
Interestingly, the Dogecoin&#8217;s (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/doge/usd">DOGE</a>) network&#8217;s underlying technology is derived from Litecoin.
Speculative interest in LTC exploded, with a 23% jump in money invested in futures contracts, <a href="https://www.coinglass.com/BitcoinOpenInterest">according </a>to Coinglass.
More than 50% of traders placed bullish bets on the coin, anticipating further increases.

LTC Properties, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LTC#NYSE">LTC</a>), a real estate investment trust primarily invests in seniors housing and health care properties, today announced that Wendy Simpson has been appointed Executive Chairman of Board of Directors, Pam Kessler and Clint Malin have been promoted to Co-Chief Executive Officers, and Cece Chikhale has been promoted to Chief Financial Officer. The appointments are part of the Company's succession plan and are effective December 31, 2024.
The Company said it is conducting a search for a new Chief Investment Officer to succeed Clint Malin, who will retain that function until a successor is named.
Executive Chairman: Wendy Simpson, 75, has been LTC's Chief Executive Officer since 2007, after joining the Company in 2000. Throughout her tenure with the Company, Simpson served as Vice Chairman, President, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer. Prior to joining LTC, she held executive positions in public companies that owned acute and long-term acute care hospitals, psychiatric hospitals and home health services.
Co-Chief Executive Officer: Pam Kessler, 58, has been LTC's Co-President since 2020, and also served as Chief Financial Officer since 2007. She joined the Company in 2000 as Controller. Before that, Kessler was the Corporate Controller for a privately held commercial and multifamily real estate developer. She also was the Director of Financial Reporting for Irvine Apartment Communities, an apartment REIT. Additionally, Kessler served as Assistant Controller of the Inland Empire division of KB Home, a publicly traded homebuilder. Kessler retains her role as Co-President.
Co-Chief Executive Officer: Clint Malin, 52, has been LTC's Co-President since 2020, and has served as Chief Investment Officer since 2004 when he joined the Company. Prior to that, Malin was the Vice President of Corporate Real Estate for Sun Healthcare Group, Inc. (now Genesis HealthCare). Malin retains his role as Co-President.
Chief Financial Officer:Cece Chikhale, 48, has been LTC's Chief Accounting Officer since 2020 and has been Controller and Treasurer since 2007. She joined the Company in 2002 as an Accounting Manager and also was Assistant Controller and Assistant Treasurer. Chikhale retains her roles as Principal Accounting Officer and Treasurer.

Litecoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/ltc/usd">LTC</a>) and Dogecoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/doge/usd">DOGE</a>) recorded a sharp uptick in hash rate on Sunday after a mining company disclosed that the two coins yielded three times the profit as mining Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) alone.
What happened: Litecoin's hash rate jumped from 1.48 PetaHashes per second to a fresh all-time high of 1.7128 PH/s, marking a 15% spike, <a href="https://www.coinwarz.com/mining/litecoin/hashrate-chart">according </a>to Coinwarz.&nbsp;
Similarly, Dogecoin's hash rate breached the 2.52 PH/s level for the first time on Sunday, before pulling back to 1.58 PH/s at the time of writing.

Why It Matters: As is well known, hash rate is a measure of the computational power used to solve complex cryptographic puzzles in a blockchain network.&nbsp;
Typically, hash rates jump when more miners, i.e., more computers and mining rigs, join a network. This, in turn, could happen when the underlying cryptocurrency's price is high and mining activity becomes more profitable.&nbsp;
According to BitInfoCharts, Litecoin's mining profitability <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/bit-mining-dogecoin-litecoin-boosted-mining-profitability">reached </a>a nearly seven-month high of $0.346 for every 1 GigaHash per second of computational power, or hash rate, invested.&nbsp;
Dogecoin's profitability per 1 GH/s unit of hash rate also rose significantly over the last month.
The profitability likely spiked as both LTC and DOGE gained in value in recent weeks. While LTC soared 69% over the month, DOGE grew a whopping 107%.
These readings come amid <a href="https://www.btcm.group/news-detail?id=134193">disclosure </a>by mining company BIT Mining Limited (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BTCM#NYSE">BTCM</a>) last week that expanding into Litecoin and Dogecoin caused its profits to rise threefold than mining just Bitcoin.
The company said it mined 84,485 LTCs and over 227 million DOGE as of Nov. 27.

He added, "San Diego has been the best-performing market following the trough in home prices observed in early 2023. With Los Angeles rising for 13 consecutive months to record another new high, Southern California has outperformed its surrounding neighbors."
