What Happened: The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) on Friday rejected Talen Energy&#8217;s request to increase how much power its Susquehanna nuclear plant in Pennsylvania can provide to Amazon Web Services.
According to a CNBC <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/11/04/tech-partnerships-with-power-companies-for-ai-in-doubt-after-ferc-order.html">report</a>, Talen Energy sold a data center campus to Amazon in March for $650 million. The company had filed a request to increase the power dispatched to the facility from 300 megawatts to 480 megawatts, but FERC shot it down, saying the arrangement could have &#8220;huge ramifications&#8221; on grid reliability and consumer costs. 
Talen issued a statement in response to the order rejecting its amended plans, saying it believes FERC &#8220;erred&#8221; in its decision. The company noted that it&#8217;s evaluating its options with a focus on commercial solutions. 
&#8220;We believe this ISA amendment is just and reasonable and in the best interest of consumers. FERC&#8217;s decision will have a chilling effect on economic development in states such as Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New Jersey,&#8221; the company said in the statement.
Talen noted that the existing agreement allows for 300 MW of co-located load at Susquehanna. Despite the rejected amendment, Talen said it can still proceed with development of the first phases of the Amazon Web Services data center campus using the 300 MW while it continues to pursue approval of an amended agreement.

Several nuclear stocks are falling Monday after rallying over the past month. Constellation Energy Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CEG#NASDAQ">CEG</a>) and Vistra Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VST#NYSE">VST</a>) were down 10.5% and 2.2%, respectively, in sympathy with Talen.

Yesterday, nuclear stocks soared following Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) Web Services (AWS) announced a plan to invest over $500 million in nuclear power.

(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NNE#NASDAQ">NNE</a>), and Lightbridge Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LTBR#NASDAQ">LTBR</a>).
The deal is important as nuclear reactors produce no carbon emissions, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/10/16/amazon-goes-nuclear-investing-more-than-500-million-to-develop-small-module-reactors.html" rel="noreferrer noopener">per</a> a CNBC report.
In fact, the Biden administration has invested billions in clean energy production. In conjunction with this AWS announcement, U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm stated that $900 million in new funding is now available for those aiming to deploy additional SMRs, CNBC added.
The Wall Street Journal added that the reactors are not expected to be delivered until between 2030 and 2035.
On Monday, Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>) announced its support for constructing seven SMRs from the startup Kairos Power in a pioneering agreement.

What Happened: AWS, Amazon&#8217;s cloud computing subsidiary, said it signed three new agreements on Wednesday to support the development of nuclear energy projects, including the construction of several new Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). 
Amazon inked a deal with Energy Northwest in Washington to build four advanced SMRs. The reactors are expected to generate approximately 320 MW of capacity in the first phase of the project, with the option to increase to 960 MW in total.
The tech giant also invested in X-energy. Amazon said it plans to use the company&#8217;s advanced nuclear reactor design&nbsp;in the Energy Northwest project. The investment includes manufacturing capacity to develop the SMR equipment to support more than five gigawatts of new nuclear energy projects.
Amazon also signed an agreement with Dominion Energy in Virginia to explore the development of an SMR project near Dominion's North Anna nuclear power station. The project would bring at least 300 MW of power to the Virginia region.

Ambassador Thomas Graham Jr. boasts a distinguished career spanning several decades in the realm of arms control and non-proliferation, serving in pivotal roles within the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency from 1970 to 1997. Throughout his tenure, he was instrumental in every major arms control and non-proliferation negotiation the United States participated in, including the SALT I, SALT II, and START negotiations, alongside discussions on test bans, conventional armed forces in Europe, and chemical and biological weapons. Notably, he played a critical role in the successful conclusion of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty negotiations in 1996.
Appointed by President Clinton as Special Representative of the President for Arms Control, Non-Proliferation, and Disarmament in 1994, Graham led the successful U.S. efforts to indefinitely extend the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in Force. His expertise was also sought internationally, as evidenced by his advisory role in the United Arab Emirates' peaceful nuclear energy program from 2009 to 2016, aimed at upholding the highest standards of safety, security, non-proliferation, and sustainability.
An esteemed educator, Ambassador Graham has lectured at prestigious institutions, including Stanford University, the University of Virginia, and Georgetown University, and is an accomplished author of 13 books on arms control and nuclear power.
