General Motors

General Motors Co. emerged from the bankruptcy of General Motors Corp. (old GM) in July 2009. GM has eight brands and operates under four segments: GM North America, GM International, Cruise, and GM Financial. The United States now has four brands instead of eight under old GM. The company regained its U.S. market share leader crown in 2022, after losing it to Toyota due to the chip shortage in 2021. 2023's share was 16.5%. GM's Cruise autonomous vehicle arm has previously done driverless geofenced AV robotaxi services in San Francisco and other cities but stopped in late 2023 after an accident. It should restart in at least one city in 2024. GM owns over 80% of Cruise. GM Financial became the company's captive finance arm in October 2010 via the purchase of AmeriCredit.

They both need to answer how they intend to grow their profits amid the EV slowdown to which even the EV king, Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tsla#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>), isn&rsquo;t immune. Tesla warned of slower growth this year. With the EV sales slump, Tesla shares tumbled as much as 39% year to date. Along with growing competition in China, Tesla has also found itself in the mud, let alone legacy automakers struggling to make their biggest ever transformation for the all-electric era that is still coming, just not as fast.&nbsp;
<h3>GM</h3>
GM is yet to outline its strategy for restructuring its business in China.&nbsp;Last year, GM delivered&nbsp;2.1 million vehicles&nbsp;in the world&rsquo;s greatest EV market. Besides the restructuring, GM also needs to address its struggling Cruise Robotaxi division. But when it comes to seeing consistent profitability, GM&nbsp;is expected to report&nbsp;strong sales of its Chevrolet and GMC trucks, along with&nbsp;SUVs.
<h3>Ford&nbsp;</h3>
Ford,is getting its&nbsp;power from combustion trucks, along with its&nbsp;Ford Pro commercial vehicles.&nbsp;Ford did affirm its core profit guidance for the year to be in the range between&nbsp;$10 billion&nbsp;and&nbsp;$12 billion.&nbsp;
Last year, Ford&nbsp;lost nearly $4.7 billion&nbsp;EVs. This year, it forecasted the loss of $5 billion. In February, it clearly stated that it will launch the next generation&nbsp;of EVs only a time&nbsp;when they can be profitable.&nbsp;Earlier in April, Ford announced it intends to slow down its major EV programs. Ford has been forced to reconsider to&nbsp;launches of three-row EVs in Canada and its next-generation electric pickup truck built in Tennessee. In a separate announcement, Ford&nbsp;announced it will delay the&nbsp;deliveries of&nbsp;its&nbsp;all-new EV truck it will build at a new plant in western Tennessee until 2026. Last year, it planned to kick off production in late 2025, aiming for an annual output of&nbsp;500,000 electric trucks. But after reconsidering, it decided to build the output gradually.&nbsp;Meanwhile, Ford continues to boost its hybrid offerings.&nbsp;
Ford and GM are running back to gas-powered trucks.
One thing that is clear is that both Ford and GM are getting power from their combustion trucks at the moment, but the EV era is still coming.&nbsp;GM and Ford are due to provide more details on the tweaking of their strategies as they&nbsp;report their results on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.&nbsp;

What Happened:&nbsp;On Tuesday, GM posted a video demonstrating the CrabWalk maneuver on its 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 and Hummer EV. CrabWalk allows the vehicle to move diagonally by mimicking a crab&#8217;s sideways motion, achieved by synchronizing the angles of the front and rear wheels.
Morrill&#8217;s Doubt:&nbsp;Tesla Cybertruck lead engineer&nbsp;Wes Morrill&nbsp;responded to the video on Twitter, expressing doubts about the feature&#8217;s real-world usefulness. He acknowledged that Tesla had considered a similar feature during development but ultimately decided against it.
&#8220;Does anyone know when this feature is practically useful? Genuinely curious,&#8221; Morrill said.
&#8220;We played with this in development&nbsp;but&nbsp;no matter what we&nbsp;tried&nbsp;it was a clunky/awkward experience with no real use case,&#8221; he added. &#8220;The feature is not sufficiently useful to allow parallel parking and is very unintuitive to control.&#8221;&nbsp;

The company said it is conducting a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://pressroom.toyota.com/toyota-recalls-certain-2023-and-2024-toyota-prius-vehicles/" rel="noreferrer noopener">safety recall</a>&nbsp;involving certain 2023-2024MY Prius, Prius HEV (Prius Prime) vehicles in Japan, North America, Europe, and Asia, according to a company release.&nbsp;
Approximately 211,000 vehicles are involved in this recall in total, with approximately 55,000 in the U.S. owing to door handle fault.
Water infiltration may cause electronic rear door latches to short circuit in the affected vehicles.&nbsp;
Unlocked doors may open during motion or accidents, heightening the potential for occupant injury.
Affected vehicles will have both right and left rear door opener switches replaced with enhanced versions at Toyota dealers at no cost to the owners.
Toyota Motors said that customers in the U.S. and Canada will be advised to activate the automatic door locking feature when shifting from Park, as a precautionary measure until the remedy is accessible to prevent potential door openings due to a short circuit.

GM CEO Mary Barra and and Bedrock Chairman Dan Gilbert plan to hold a news conference Monday afternoon to discuss the deal involving the Renaissance Center, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the plans have not been formally announced.

GM said the electronic brake control module has an internal spindle that can fracture during an anti-lock braking system (ABS) event, according to the NHTSA preliminary evaluation report, which the report noted.

Attributed to a preliminary NHTSA assessment, General Motors clarified that the spindle fracture may lead to brake assist loss, speed limitations, and compromised ABS functionality.

What Happened: Cruise is now preparing to resume testing its robotaxis with safety drivers in Phoenix, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-04-09/gm-s-cruise-to-resume-testing-its-robotaxi-service-in-phoenix">reported</a> Bloomberg. The company is expected to make an official announcement and commence testing as early as Tuesday, the report said, citing two people familiar with the matter. 
In the last few months, Cruise was reportedly in discussions with authorities in 20 metropolitan areas where it previously operated or had begun mapping for future operations. 
Cruise did not immediately respond to Benzinga&#8216;s request for comment.

<h3>Hyundai And Kia Are Boosting Heir Efforts In India</h3>
Exide Energy&nbsp;plans to&nbsp;produce EV battery cells at the end of this year.&nbsp;With a specific focus on&nbsp;lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cells,&nbsp;Exide Energy Solutions&nbsp;will be supplying&nbsp;batteries&nbsp;to the South Korean automaker who aims to&nbsp;boost competitiveness in the world&#39;s&nbsp;third largest&nbsp;auto market.&nbsp;Along with the United States, South Korea and Western Europe, India is one of Hyundai and Kia&rsquo;s&nbsp;four biggest revenue generating markets.
Last year, Hyundai committed to invest about $2.40 billion over the next decade in its Indian footprint which includes the launch of six EVs by 2028, along with charging stations.
Meanwhile, Kia aims to bring locally-optimized EVs to India.

However, this is also a company that&rsquo;s a leader in the self-driving car market. The company&rsquo;s subsidiary Waymo has seen impressive growth in recent years, Recently, the company released <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/innovation/waymo-will-launch-paid-robotaxi-service-los-angeles-wednesday-rcna147101">paid robotaxi services in the Los Angeles market</a>. 



Despite initial resistance from the Teamsters Union and the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, Waymo <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2024/3/2/24088454/waymo-california-highway-expansion-los-angeles-bay-area">obtained regulatory approval</a> for the service expansion. This was done after offering complimentary &ldquo;tour&rdquo; rides. 



Waymo also revealed on April 9 that more than 50,000 individuals awaited their service&rsquo;s launch. However, they didn&rsquo;t specify the number of initial users. Operating within<a href="https://waymo.com/blog/2024/03/scaling-waymo-one-safely-across-four-cities-this-year/"> a 63-square-mile area </a>from Santa Monica to downtown L.A., Waymo started with fewer than 50 cars in Los Angeles. Like traditional ride-hailing platforms like Uber, Waymo&rsquo;s driverless units also have the same easy function. This now marks a growing trend for autonomous transportation.&nbsp;



Waymo&rsquo;s robotaxis are certainly very cool to see in action. I&rsquo;ve only seen videos, but do endeavor to take one on my next trip to L.A. The fact that these vehicles are completely autonomously operated is dystopian in a certain way, but also speaks to the impressive level of innovation and investment Alphabet has made in making these vehicles extremely safe. 



<h2>General Motors (GM)</h2>

The company&rsquo;s Cruise division is its self-driving robotaxi arm, which has had its fair share of troubles over the past year. GM stopped development on its Cruise platform after a pedestrian incident in San Francisco. Many thought the project may be dead, and GM&rsquo;s stock price took a hit following this news.



However, the company has said it&rsquo;s planning to resume testing of <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/gms-cruise-resume-robotaxi-tests-arizona-bloomberg-news-reports-2024-04-09/">its self-driving robotaxis in Phoenix, Arizona</a> in short order. Recent reports indicate that Cruise could see a limited return this year, potentially restarting in Houston or Dallas, following last year&rsquo;s suspension.



Cruise had made some amazing progress, and was a leader in the autonomous driving space before its recent safety incident. A management reshuffle, and a clear message being sent that safety is the number one priority with this program, is a good thing in my books. If the company can re-calibrate and get things right, it&rsquo;s a stock to watch in the self-driving world, for sure. 



<h2>Ford (F)</h2>

A later addition to this nascent market, Ford has <a href="https://corporate.ford.com/articles/products/fords-next-gen-test-vehicle.html">announced</a> it&rsquo;s taking a cautious and thoughtful approach to entering the market. The company aims to roll out a fourth-generation self-driving text vehicle (built on its Escape Hybrid platform) in key markets. The company&rsquo;s partnership with Argo, a self-driving company Ford <a href="https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2017/02/10/ford-invests-in-argo-ai-new-artificial-intelligence-company.html">began investing in</a> previously in 2017, is thus now starting to yield fruit.



We&rsquo;ll have to see how this roll out ultimately goes. But Ford has said that it&rsquo;s on the way to launching a full sell-driving service in short order, once an appropriate amount of testing is done. 



Ford might be the more high-risk bet in this space, to be sure. The company is focused on increasing its return on invested capital to <a href="https://s201.q4cdn.com/693218008/files/doc_financials/2023/q4/2-6-24-Ford-Delivers-Solid-2023-Provides-Outlook-for-Healthy-24-Company-Declares-Regular-Supplemental-Stock-Dividends.pdf">20% from 2023&rsquo;s 14%</a> over the next four years. This aligns the company&rsquo;s investments with more strategic objectives aimed at generating more stable growth. If the company can get self-driving right, it could be a key player in the U.S. market over the long-term.

United States equities have been quite mixed in Q2. The&nbsp;S&amp;P 500 has fallen 3.7% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq 1.2%. The Dow Jones Industrial is performing the worst of the other indices. The index that tracks many <a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-types/blue-chip-stocks/">blue-chip stocks</a> has dropped more than 5% for the quarter and is only up 0.12% on a year-to-date perspective, guiding us towards some obvious blue-chip stocks to avoid. 



Speculation on where interest rates and inflation will land has probably caused a lot of volatility for blue-chip stocks, especially those that have capex-heavy businesses or focus on consumer end-markets. For the March consumer price index (<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/cpi-stock-quote/">CPI</a>) report, economists and market analysts had <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-04-10/us-core-cpi-rises-more-than-forecast-for-third-straight-month?sref=a6OYFmE3">expected there to be a downtick</a> in the core CPI figures for March, but instead, there was a month-to-month increase of 0.4% while the Y/Y rate for the core CPI remained at 3.8%. In other words, inflation seems here to stay for some time, which casts doubt on any Q2 rate cut that some analysts were hoping for. In fact, interest rates may have to go up another time to get inflation sufficiently under control. 



If inflation remains sticky and interest rates remain elevated where they are, these are some of the blue-chip stocks to avoid. 



<h2>Boeing (BA)</h2>

At this point, the aircraft manufacturer has been through a number of controversies and crises of confidence that should keep many investors away. Despite the decades that the company spent developing itself into a leading manufacturer of commercial and military aircraft, satellites and rockets, Boeing&rsquo;s 737-MAX has been a manufacturing tragedy. There were two fatal crashes of its 737 MAX jet in 2019 and 2020 due <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2021-11-16/are-boeing-planes-unsafe-pilots-blamed-for-corporate-errors-in-max-737-crash?sref=a6OYFmE3">automated flight software</a> misreading sensors and pushing the planes into a nosedive.



Most recently, the emergency exit door bolts of a 737-MAX owned by&nbsp;Alaska Airlines&nbsp;flew off mid-flight, causing a depressurization event. While no one was seriously harmed, Boeing&rsquo;s reputation certainly was. The Federal Aviation Administration, in turn,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.faa.gov/newsroom/faa-halts-boeing-max-production-expansion-improve-quality-control-also-lays-out-extensive#:~:text=Flight%20Delay%20Information-,FAA%20Halts%20Boeing%20MAX%20Production%20Expansion%20to%20Improve%20Quality%20Control,Aircraft%20to%20Return%20to%20Service&amp;text=WASHINGTON%20%E2%80%93%20The%20Jan.%205%20Boeing,incident%20must%20never%20happen%20again.">halted the expansion</a>&nbsp;of 737-MAX manufacturing.



United Airlines&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/ual-stock-quote/">UAL</a>) is under&nbsp;<a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/faa-step-up-scrutiny-united-airlines-after-recent-incidents-2024-03-22/">regulatory scrutiny</a>&nbsp;after a number of near catastrophes on its Boeing planes. Moreover,&nbsp;Korean Air&nbsp;and&nbsp;Japan Airlines&nbsp;(OTCMKTS:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/japsy-stock-quote/">JAPSY</a>), both of which tend to be loyal Boeing customers, have recently&nbsp;<a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/jal-plans-buy-42-planes-with-catalogue-price-124-bln-2024-03-21/">signed major deals</a>&nbsp;with&nbsp;Airbus&nbsp;(OTCMKTS:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/eadsy-stock-quote/">EADSY</a>), a major blowback for Boeing.



Higher interest rates when Boeing will need to better scrutinize its manufacturing processes, could lead to higher capex costs and lower net margins for the company. 



These delays and manufacturing inadequacies have, of course, blighted Boeing&rsquo;s share performance. The aircraft manufacturer&rsquo;s stock is down more than 35% for the year, and investors are perhaps better off selling now before things get worse.



<h2>General Motors (GM)</h2>

The legacy automaker has increased its exposure to battery development boasting its own&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gm.com/stories/ultium-flexible-battery-cells" target="_blank">battery platform called Ultium</a>, which can power a variety of EV models with different sizes, shapes, and performance levels.



The U.S. automaker&rsquo;s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gm.com/commitments/electrification">wide variety of EVs</a>&nbsp;could allow it to be a formidable contender in the burgeoning market. However, the electric vehicle market has experienced slowing growth over the past few months. GM hasn&rsquo;t been immune to the broader market slump. EV manufacturers will be amongst the hardest hit if interest rates to come down soon. Most consumers in the U.S. purchase vehicles with car notes, and of course these loans have become more expensive, disincentivizing people from purchasing new vehicles. 



GM shares are up 19% for the year but have fallen nearly 6% for the quarter.



<h2>Apple (AAPL)</h2>

AAPL stock."><div>Source: Moab Republic / Shutterstock</div></div>The renowned iPhone maker,&nbsp;Apple&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/aapl-stock-quote/">AAPL</a>), has seen its share price slump in 2024. Currently, Apple&rsquo;s stock has fallen more than 10% since the start of the year. This puts the iPhone maker at odds with some many other Big&nbsp;<a href="https://investorplace.com/industries/technology/">Tech stocks</a>&nbsp;that have enjoyed this year&rsquo;s broad rally.



The company&rsquo;s fourth-quarter report for 2023 saw revenue decline by 1% year over year. Subsequent sales declines will likely occur. The iPhone-maker&rsquo;s end-markets are oversaturated, and the company has no clear diversification strategy. Moreover, with China&rsquo;s Huawei back in the mix, Apple is facing intense competition in its largest overseas market. 



While the <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-04-15/apple-s-iphone-shipments-plunge-10-as-android-rivals-rise?sref=a6OYFmE3">global handset market rebounded</a> in the first quarter of 2024, Apple&rsquo;s shipments declined by 10% Y/Y, while Chinese counterparts like Xiaomi saw a 33% Y/Y increase. Now, Korean conglomerate Samsung holds the largest market share in the handset market. As interest rates remain elevated, consumers will probably continue to think twice about getting new consumer electronics, especially as rates weigh on people&rsquo;s budgets.

Avoid These 3 Blue-Chip Traps Amidst High Interest Rate Fears

Tesla stock (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/tsla-stock-quote/">TSLA</a>) dominated the global market for electric vehicles just two years ago. It had enormous margins, which it plowed into new plants and new technology. It was worth a premium price.



All that is gone now. Thanks to the distraction of <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/01/teslas-downfall-why-the-cybertruck-marks-the-end-for-tsla-stock/">the CyberTruck</a>, and <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/02/will-quantumscapes-feb-14-earnings-spark-love-or-loss-for-investors/">losing its lead in batteries</a>, Tesla created its own downfall.



The coming <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/04/tesla-layoffs-2024-what-to-know-about-the-latest-tsla-job-cuts-2/">layoffs and losses</a> can&rsquo;t be excused by Tesla stock bulls. They aren&rsquo;t fully appreciated by bears, either.



If Tesla really is just a car company, and no longer a pioneer in Electric Vehicles (EVs), what&rsquo;s it worth?



<h2>GM vs. Tesla</h2>



The answer is, not much.



Consider General Motors (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/gm-stock-quote/">GM</a>). It had sales of <a href="https://www.wsj.com/market-data/quotes/GM/financials/annual/income-statement">$172 billion </a>last year, up nearly 10%. Over $10 billion became net income. It&rsquo;s worth just $50 billion and carries a price to earnings (PE) ratio of just 6. The average analyst at Tipranks sees a 15% gain in it over the next 12 months.



Now look at Tesla. Sales were <a href="https://www.wsj.com/market-data/quotes/TSLA/financials/annual/income-statement">$96 billion</a> last year. Net income was about $15 billion. Those are good numbers, but Tesla is also worth $492 billion, nearly 10 times more than GM.



Now consider that, at least in the current quarter, GM is growing, while Tesla is not. GM will have electric SUVs priced at just <a href="https://cleantechnica.com/2023/12/03/gm-expects-its-electric-vehicles-to-become-profitable-in-2025/">$30,000 </a>next year, and plans to make money at that price. Tesla <a href="https://www.motortrend.com/news/tesla-model-2-model-c-model-q-small-ev-future-cars/">was said</a> to have three new models coming out next year, but has backed away in favor of a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-robotaxi-not-enough-model-2-needed-wedbush-analysts-2024-4">&ldquo;robo-taxi&rdquo;</a> with full self-driving no one (save the most bullish) really believes in. 



Still think Tesla is worth 10 times more than GM?



<h2>The Posse is Coming</h2>



The global auto industry has had 5 years to match Tesla, and it has caught up. The global industry is now saying &ldquo;25 in 25,&rdquo; meaning $25,000 EVs will be coming to American roads in 2025.



China&rsquo;s EV market, once dominated by Tesla, is now ruled by Chinese brands like BYD (OTCMKTS:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/byddf-stock-quote/">BYDDF</a>). Korea&rsquo;s Hyundai (OTCMKTS:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/hymtf-stock-quote/">HYMTF</a>) will be making <a href="https://apnews.com/article/hyundai-georgia-electric-vehicle-ev-845e2729fd5220797e7984f424bc1d5c">300,000 EVs in Georgia </a>next year, and even more batteries. BMW (OTCMKTS:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/bmwyy-stock-quote/">BMWYY</a>) has <a href="https://www.bmwusa.com/all-electric.html">4 EVs </a> getting good reviews.



Volkswagen (OTCMKTS:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/vwagy-stock-quote/">VWAGY</a>), said to be falling behind in EVs, will have <a href="https://insideevs.com/news/657415/volkswagen-id2-all-concept-previews-the-peoples-electric-car/">a $27,000 model out next year</a>. Even Ford Motor (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/f-stock-quote/">F</a>) is planning <a href="https://www.motortrend.com/news/secret-affordable-ford-evs-coming-to-take-on-tesla-and-china/">a sub-$25,000 EV. </a>



<h2>Tesla&rsquo;s Strengths</h2>



This doesn&rsquo;t mean Tesla lacks strengths that offer a premium over GM, even if its profits come up short.



The company is a leader in packing batteries. It laps the field when it comes to extracting money from customers after they drive off the lot. Service, insurance, and software are all great profit centers.



There&rsquo;s also the SuperCharger network, which has seen off all challengers to become the North American standard.



But I&rsquo;m not paying $500 billion for a gas station.



<h2>The Bottom Line</h2>



Against all that stands the figure of Elon Musk himself. I had my doubts <a href="https://www.danablankenhorn.com/2021/12/elon-musk-is-dangerously-like-henry-ford.html">back in 2021</a>. I have seen nothing since to change my mind.



Great wealth brings with it great responsibility. If your only interest lies in yourself, you deserve to lose it. I wouldn&rsquo;t invest a dollar in Elon Musk, and you shouldn&rsquo;t either.



That doesn&rsquo;t mean Tesla stock is worthless, or that it&rsquo;s only a short. It is worth more than General Motors, even though it&rsquo;s smaller. But is it worth more than Toyota (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/tm-stock-quote/">TM</a>), where growth is stagnant, net margins are just 6.6%, but sales of <a href="https://www.wsj.com/market-data/quotes/TM/financials/annual/income-statement">$241 billion</a> give it a market cap of $393 billion?



I don&rsquo;t think so. This means Tesla should fall at least another 20% from here. From there, who knows? <a href="https://companiesmarketcap.com/automakers/largest-automakers-by-market-cap/">No other global auto maker is worth even $100 billion.</a>



It will take time to get there, but when Tesla falls to its fundamental value, Tesla bulls will be hitting you up for a loan.

Tesla Stock Forecast: Why a Double-Digit Plunge Could Be on the Horizon

Nio (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/nio-stock-quote/">NIO</a>) is expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging network through an important new partnership. After months of struggling, the Chinese EV producer needs a growth driving catalyst &mdash; and it may have just found one. Now, NIO stock is rising on news of an agreement with SAIC General Motors Corporation (SAIC-GM), a joint venture of General Motors (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/gm-stock-quote/">GM</a>).



As part of the new partnership, CnEVPost <a href="https://cnevpost.com/2024/04/18/saic-gm-plugs-into-nio-charging-network/#:~:text=SAIC%2DGM%20and%20Nio%20have,network%2C%20the%20automaker%20announced%20today.">reports</a>, &ldquo;more than 10,000 Nio charging terminals join SAIC-GM&rsquo;s Ultium energy replenishment network.&rdquo; This means that Nio&rsquo;s network will be open to many more drivers who own SAIC-GM models. 



News of this development has boosted NIO stock, indicating that the market is responding well to the partnership. This is good news for investors in more ways than one. It suggests that Nio&rsquo;s way back to success may be through its charging network, not just EV sales. 



<h2>What&rsquo;s Happening With NIO Stock? </h2>



This partnership seems to be exactly what NIO stock needed to start rising. As of this writing, shares are up about 3% for the day. General Motors was in the green earlier today as well, although some of its growth may have been due to momentum for its <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/gm-plans-move-headquarters-different-building-detroit-source-2024-04-15/">new headquarters</a>.



That said, investors shouldn&rsquo;t discount the significance of Nio&rsquo;s latest growth-driving announcement. SAIC-GM is responsible for the production of the popular Buick and Cadillac brands. Under this partnership, any driver who owns an EV from either will be able to plug into one of Nio&rsquo;s chargers and access it through a smartphone app. This will also allow them to view real-time charging pile prices.



Of course, it isn&rsquo;t hard to see how this could benefit both NIO stock and GM, particularly given the <a href="https://www.electrive.com/2024/04/18/saic-gm-nio-announce-charging-partnership-in-china/">vast size of Nio&rsquo;s charging network</a>. Per Electrive:




&ldquo;Currently, Nio has a total of 2,204 charging stations across China, including a total of 10,056 charging piles [&hellip;] Of these stations, 364 are located in highway service areas, while its&nbsp;<a href="https://www.electrive.com/2024/01/12/nio-sings-battery-swapping-agreement-with-jac-and-chery/">battery-swapping network</a>&nbsp;covers a total of 2,402 locations, including 790 on highways. Nio also points out that its network has been open since the beginning, &lsquo;with around 80 per cent of the power provided being used by non-Nio models.'&rdquo;




This isn&rsquo;t the first charging network development that Nio has announced this month, either. Earlier in April, the company entered into a <a href="https://cnevpost.com/2024/04/03/jiyue-plugs-into-nio-charging-network/">similar agreement</a> with Jiyue, a Chinese EV producer backed by Baidu (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/bidu-stock-quote/">BIDU</a>). 



<h2>Why It Matters</h2>



Today&rsquo;s charging network news is definitely a step in the right direction for Nio. NIO stock has barely stayed above water as the EV market has been rocked by turbulence over the past year. Now, though, the firm&rsquo;s focus on its charging network and <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/04/nio-eyes-expanding-battery-swap-program-to-supercharge-nio-stock/">battery swapping operations</a> &mdash; rather than only pumping out EVs into an already-crowded market &mdash; appears to be a good sign. Gaining a footing in other areas of the market is a strategic move that could easily pay off for Nio &mdash; and investors in NIO stock.
