Against the backdrop, economist Peter Schiff flagged the eerie possibility of the return of the yen-carry unwinding.
What Happened: The U.S. dollar fell below the 142 handle against the yen for the first time in 2024, observed Schiff in a post on X, formerly Twitter. The next support level for the pair is around 128, a 20% drop from the June high, he said. 
&#8220;This will result in significant pressure to unwind the yen carry trade, which is bearish for long-term Treasuries and risk assets,&#8221; he added.

Why It&#8217;s Important: Even as the Fed led by Jerome Powell is moving closer to beginning monetary policy normalization, the Bank of Japan, which has maintained an ultra-loose monetary policy for a fairly long time, has taken a divergent route. Since March 19, when Japan's central bank announced its first rate hike in about 17 years, the yen has appreciated&nbsp;6.5% against the dollar. 
The Bank of Japan followed up with an<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/07/40058319/bank-of-japan-raises-main-interest-rate-unwinds-longstanding-easy-policy-even-as-jerome-powells-take" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> increment to its key interest in late July to around 0.25%</a>.
The yen-carry trade, a popular strategy of borrowing yen at very low interest rates and using the capital to purchase investments denominated in another currency in a country that has a higher rate of return, unraveled amid the strengthening of the yen. This resulted in the global market crash of Aug. 5, when Japan&#8217;s Nikkei 225 fell a whopping 12.4%. The sell-off proved contagious, reverberating across the global markets.
The S&amp;P 500 Index, which peaked in late July, slumped 3% but has since then recovered.
At last check, the yen traded at 141.47 against the dollar, but off the highs of 140.72 reached on Tuesday.
The Invesco DB US Dollar Index Bullish Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) ended Tuesday&#8217;s session up 0.04% at $28.31, according to <a href="https://benzinga.grsm.io/register174">Benzinga Pro data.</a>

Peter Schiff Raises Specter Of Early August-Like Collapse In Risky Assets As Dollar Falls To Worst Level In 9 Months Against Yen

Shares of Dave &amp; Buster&#8217;s Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLAY#NASDAQ">PLAY</a>) rose sharply in today's pre-market trading after the company posted stronger-than-expected earnings for<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/09/40804051/dave-busters-stock-races-higher-after-q2-eps-beat-details"> its second quarter on Tuesday.</a>
Dave &amp; Buster's reported quarterly earnings of $1.12 per share, which beat the analyst consensus estimate of 84 cents by 33.33%. Quarterly sales came in at $557.1 million, slightly below the analyst consensus estimate of $560.646 million.
Dave &amp; Buster&#8217;s Entertainment shares jumped 12.7% to $33.66 in the pre-market trading.

Why Dave & Buster's Shares Are Trading Higher By Around 13%; Here Are 20 Stocks Moving Premarket

California-based EV startup Lucid Group (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LCID#NASDAQ">LCID</a>) on Tuesday offered a sneak peek at its <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/05/38663810/lucid-ceo-throws-down-the-gauntlet-with-48k-ev-plan-to-take-on-teslas-dominance-wait-until-our-midsi">upcoming midsize SUV</a> slated to compete against Tesla Inc&#8216;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) bestselling Model Y. 
What Happened: Lucid on Tuesday showed a darkened image of the upcoming midsize vehicle at its technology and manufacturing day event. The image, however, does not give away much besides the upper silhouette of the vehicle, significantly different from the Model Y but bearing resemblances to Lucid&#8217;s upcoming Gravity SUV. 
But the proportions of the midsize are seemingly way smaller than Gravity, which is a full-size SUV. 
The midsize vehicle is expected to enter production in late 2026 with a starting price of about $48,000. The price point of $48,000 will put the vehicle in direct competition with Tesla's mass-market offerings Model 3 and Model Y. Tesla&#8217;s Model Y starts at $44,990 for the base version while the base version of the Model 3 sedan starts at $38,990. 
&#8220;With leading technology and efficiency, it will be able to deliver the same range as competitors while using a smaller battery,&#8221; Lucid said about its upcoming vehicle.

Why It Matters: Lucid&#8217;s current lineup has higher-end, low-volume EV offerings. The company is attempting to break out of the segment with the midsize. 
Lucid's premium sedan called Lucid Air is its only vehicle currently in production. Its cheapest variant has a starting price of $69,900 while the more premium Grand Touring and Sapphire versions start at $109,900 and $249,000, respectively.
The company is gearing up to start production of its Gravity SUV, which it believes to be better than rival&nbsp;Tesla&#8217;s&nbsp;premium Model X SUV,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/05/38663810/lucid-ceo-throws-down-the-gauntlet-with-48k-ev-plan-to-take-on-teslas-dominance-wait-until-our-midsi" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">later this year</a>. The vehicle is expected to start under $80,000, around the same price bracket as its Air sedan.
In the second quarter, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/07/39743359/exclusive-as-lucid-gears-up-to-take-on-teslas-model-x-analysts-lay-out-the-problems">Lucid delivered 2,394 EVs</a>, marking its best quarter to date in terms of sales. However, the company has yet to turn a profit and reported a net loss of $643.39 million for the three months through the end of June.

What Happened: The eco-friendly FineWoven cases, introduced last year with the iPhone 15, are no longer up for sale on Apple&#8217;s website. The product has not been launched for the recently announced iPhone 16 either, Business Insider<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/apple-appears-to-quietly-admit-defeat-over-a-controversial-iphone-accessory-thats-vanished-from-its-website/articleshow/113236997.cms"> reported</a> on Wednesday.
The FineWoven cases, which faced user backlash due to their susceptibility to scratches, dust accumulation, and retention of circular indents from MagSafe charging, are now seemingly discontinued. The iPhone 16, however, will have new cases from Apple&#8217;s subsidiary Beats, supporting MagSafe charging and Apple&#8217;s new Camera Control feature.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) hit cryptocurrency entities with record fines in 2024, highlighting the growing financial risk for companies that fail to comply with regulatory standards.
What happened: According to a <a href="https://socialcapitalmarkets.net/crypto-trading/crypto-sec-fines-penalties/">study</a> released by cryptocurrency analytics firm Social Capital Markets, the regulator has issued over $7.42 billion in fines since 2013, with $4.68 billion, or around 63%, coming this year alone.
The fines issued surged by a whopping 3,018% from last year, when the cryptocurrency industry was fined just over $150 million.
This year&#8217;s figures were boosted by the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/06/39304765/bankrupt-terraform-labs-and-founder-do-kwon-reach-historic-4-47b-settlement-with-the-sec-i">historic $4.47 billion fine</a> against bankrupt company Terraform Labs for defrauding cryptocurrency investors during the infamous Terra (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/luna/usd">LUNA</a>) implosion in 2022, the event that precipitated the cryptocurrency bear market.&nbsp;
This was the largest enforcement action to date, dwarfing prior sanctions and setting a new standard for regulatory monitoring of the cryptocurrency market, the report said.&nbsp;
Around 11 enforcement actions were carried out by the SEC in 2024, with an average fine of $426 million. For context, the average fine last year was just $5 million across 30 enforcement actions.
