Former Trump Attorney Says 'Very Unusual' To Have Lawyers On The Jury: 'They Can Be A Very Strong Voice'

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is facing criticism from conservatives due to the lack of border security provisions in his latest foreign aid proposal.
What Happened: Johnson dismissed the criticism on Wednesday, attributing the lack of action to Senate and White House Democrats. He stated, &#8220;Some of my colleagues want the Speaker of the House to have a magic wand. The Speaker&#8217;s comments came after the release of legislative text for three bills that would combine military assistance to Ukraine, Israel, and allies in the Indo-Pacific with humanitarian aid for Gaza. These bills, however, do not include a border security measure, a reversal from Johnson&#8217;s previous indication that aid for Ukraine would be tied to such measures.
Despite Johnson&#8217;s efforts, several conservatives criticized his move, accusing him of making bipartisan deals with President Joe Biden. Union representatives reached an agreement via a bargaining committee made up of Eaze employees represented by UFCW locals 5, 135, 324, and 770. The agreement guarantees better pay, a fair process for reimbursement of the costs of operating their vehicles, work hours and a multitude of enforceable rights and protections on the job. The committee is recommending that all implied workers sign the offer, which is expected to happen in the coming days.
"We felt we needed to reject the company&#8217;s initial offer, and an overwhelming majority of Eaze members agreed, which brought the company back to the table," said Giovanna Sanchez-Esquival, a driver at Element 7 in South San Francisco. Conflict duration is explained by this and other previous rejections, which led to a halt in negotiations in the past March.
This agreement comes at a time when cannabis delivery company Eaze is facing hurdles on multiple fronts, including a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/23/08/33478363/cannabis-delivery-company-faces-legal-battle-allegations-of-fraud-unlawful-operations">lawsuit </a>brought by former partners Green Dragon.

What Happened: In a tight race between Trump and President Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election, both candidates are reminding voters of their records while serving in the White House.
Sen. Warren would like voters to know that she thought Trump only had two accomplishments during his time in the White House.
"Donald Trump actually had only two accomplishments in his four years. One was the extremist Supreme Court that overturned Roe V. Wade, and the other was more than $2 trillion in tax cuts, mostly soaked up by millionaires, billionaires, and giant corporations," Warren said during an interview on "All In With Chris Hayes."
Warren contrasted the record of Trump with Biden.
"Here's Joe Biden out there fighting to make sure that we get access to abortion and other reproductive rights, but on taxes, watch the difference. Joe Biden actually got through a 15% minimum corporate tax on billionaire corporations."
Warren said this was the first tax increase on big corporations in more than 30 years during her interview on the weekday news segment, which airs on MSNBC, a unit of Comcast Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CMCSA#NASDAQ">CMCSA</a>).
The senator stated that Trump said he was going to cut taxes for the rich again, compared to Biden who said he would raise taxes on billionaires more.
"He's going to use that money to invest back in America and that is a huge difference between them," she said.
Why It's Important: Warren highlighted that tax cuts on the wealthy led by Trump expire in 2025.
"They expire on their own unless affirmatively extended, right? So, the kind of the default is on the side of going away, which does create enormous incentive for people who are very wealthy … to try and get Donald Trump elected," Warren said.
Warren said that if the Republicans control the game, rich people will get a bigger payday and "everybody else has to pick up the slack."
The comments from Warren on Trump's Roe V. Wade accomplishment came as abortion is becoming an increased focus for the 2024 election and a key point drilled home to voters by Biden's campaign.
The state of Arizona recently placed new rules on abortions. Trump has also tried to distance himself from a national abortion ban, calling for it to be an issue for states to decide.
Warren and Hayes also pointed to the importance of records in the 2024 election as this marks the first time since the 1892 election that both candidates had previously served as presidents of the U.S.

Elizabeth Warren Says Trump Had Only 2 Accomplishments As President: 'Huge Difference Between' Biden, Trump

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) took another swipe at the cannabis legalization amendment Floridians will vote on in the November 2024 elections. This time, he went after those whom he believes will smoke pot near K-12 schools.
"So someone walking by an elementary school just sitting there toking up, that's somehow okay?" DeSantis said on Wednesday to reporters at an event in Miami. "How is that good for the state of Florida?"
The proposal, known as Amendment 3, was <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/24/04/38034138/florida-supreme-court-approves-cannabis-legalization-proposal-for-november-election-in-blow-to-d">approved recently by the Florida Supreme Court</a> to advance to the November ballot. The amendment, organized by Smart and Safe Florida, indeed provides lawmakers with the authority to "limit outdoor and public consumption" just as the state does for public consumption of tobacco.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Nevertheless, DeSantis Persisted</h1>
"This amendment is the broadest amendment yet and I think it's basically going to green light marijuana usage in all these different parts of the state where we don't want that to happen," he said, <a href="https://floridapolitics.com/archives/670027-gov-desantis-slams-marijuana-amendment-again-warns-of-toking-up-near-schools/">reported</a> Florida Politics. "That is not good for families, that is not good for the elderly."
And then he went after the cannabis companies that support Amendment 3, all of whom happened to be at the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/events/cannabis-conference/">Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference</a> just several miles away in Hollywood, Fla. as he spoke.
"People aren't putting tens of millions of dollars behind that out of the goodness of their heart," DeSantis said. "They are going to make a lot of money if that amendment passes so you'd be making some companies very, very rich."

Rising From The Ashes: Two Cannabis Entrepreneurship Stories Take Center Stage At Benzinga Conference

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) pressed Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm on her past stock trading history and conflicts of interest during a<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/congress-trading"> congressional hearing Tuesday.</a>
What Happened: Granholm&#8217;s stock trading activity while serving as energy secretary <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/23/06/32896129/joe-biden-cabinet-member-faces-questions-over-stock-holdings-years-after-violating-the-stock-act">continued to draw attention</a>. 
Hawley grilled Granholm during the hearing, telling those present that the energy secretary oversees over 130 energy officials who have made over 2,000 trades in companies, which in some cases they do work with.
"This is institutionalized corruption," Hawley <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1SBD69837E">said</a>.
The senator shared a timeline with the court of Granholm previously saying she didn't own any individual stocks in April 2023. Granholm later admitted via a letter that she did own shares of several companies and preceded to sell them later.
"Why did you mislead this committee," Hawley asked.
Granholm admitted to the fault during the testimony.
"I believe that I had sold all individual stocks and I was incorrect," Granholm told Hawley and the court.
The energy secretary said she brought the error to the committee when realizing it and later sold the stocks.
Hawley told the court Granholm violated stock trading laws nine times previously and was accused of violations to the Hatch Act, which prohibits government employees from using their position to influence elections.
"You misled this committee," he said.
Granholm said she could not recall what the six stocks were that she owned and later sold, with the exception of one being Ford Motor Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>).
The energy secretary said the Ford shares were owned by her husband since he was young and she was unaware of the position.

Why It's Important: Hawley continued to press Granholm after she admitted to the error and brought the issue public.
The senator referenced Granholm previously serving on the board of electric bus company Proterra and promoting the company's products as the energy secretary while she owned shares.
As the head of the Energy Department, Hawley also accused Granholm of overseeing others who have violated stock trading.
"You are presiding over institutionalized corruption in your energy department," Hawley said.
Hawley also accused Granholm of attending conferences funded by dark money from foreign billionaires.
"Who runs the energy department?" Hawley asked, referencing Granholm, the companies she owned stock in, or the foreign billionaires.
Hawley called for Granholm to be removed or to resign with his final time before the hearing moved on: "This record is just deplorable. It is despicable. It is outrageous."
He added: "This has got to change and frankly you should go."
The heated debate came as Hawley previously called for an investigation into Granholm when she admitted to owning stocks and falsely testifying under oath.
Hawley has been a vocal proponent of banning members of Congress and elected officials from buying and selling stocks and options while in elected positions. Hawley <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/23/01/30562200/gop-senator-hawley-introduces-pelosi-act-to-ban-congress-members-from-stock-trading">introduced the PELOSI Act</a> in 2023, which stands for "the Preventing Elected Leaders from Owning Securities and Investment Act."
&#8220;As members of Congress, both senators and representatives are tasked with providing oversight of the same companies they invest in, yet they continually buy and sell stocks, outperforming the market time and again,&#8221; said Hawley at the time.

Senator Grills Energy Secretary Granholm On Stock Ownership, Disclosures: 'This Is Institutionalized Corruption'

Great Southern Bancorp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GSBC#NASDAQ">GSBC</a>) reported quarterly earnings of $1.13 per share which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $1.04 by 8.65 percent. The company reported quarterly sales of $44.816 million which missed the analyst consensus estimate of $47.515 million by 5.68 percent. Tommy Tuberville&#8216;s latest regulatory filing shows the sale of put options for Adobe Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ADBE#NASDAQ">ADBE</a>), Qualcomm Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QCOM#NASDAQ">QCOM</a>) and Applied Materials Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMAT#NASDAQ">AMAT</a>).
The trading activity of stocks and options by members of Congress continues to draw increased scrutiny, with potential conflicts of interest related to Congressional committees and the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/congress-trading">timing of trades made.</a>
The Adobe options are for a strike price of $500 and expiration date of Dec. 20, 2024. The filing indicates that four separate trades valued at $1,000 to $15,000 of Adobe options were made, <a href="https://www.quiverquant.com/congresstrading/politician/Tommy%20Tuberville-T000278">according </a>to Quiver Quant.
The Qualcomm options are for a strike price of $155 with an expiration date of Dec. 20, 2024. The transaction value of the trade was $15,000 to $50,000.
The Applied Materials options are for a strike price of $175 and an expiration date of Jan. 17, 2025. The transaction value of the trade was $1,000 to $15,000.
"BREAKING: Senator Tommy Tuberville is once again trading options," Unusual Whales <a href="https://twitter.com/unusual_whales/status/1780404471312396389">tweeted</a>. "He is literally trading companies which he legislates on, while having leveraged positions over them. Unusual."
The filing also showed the Alabama Republican once again bought shares of small biotech Humacyte Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HUMA#NASDAQ">HUMA</a>), with three transactions totaling amounts of $1,000 to $15,000; $1,000 to $15,000; and $15,000 to $50,000.
"BREAKING: Senator Tommy Tuberville has disclosed new purchase of Humacyte stock, $HUMA. It's a small biotech company that makes implantable human tissues. They've been testing their tech in Ukraine, treating combat injuries. Tuberville sits on the Armed Services Committee," Quiver Quant tweeted.
Congress Trades Create Conflict Of Interest Questions: <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/23/08/33880886/senators-perfect-timing-russian-war-linked-biotech-buy-raises-eyebrows-amid-trading-ban-debate">Benzinga previously shared</a> that trades involving Humacyte drew attention given the small-cap nature of the company and the fact that Tuberville serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee.
Humacyte collaborated with regulators, including the FDA in the U.S., to send its investigational HAV (Human Acellular Vessel) to Ukraine for humanitarian use.
The company said its HAV has been provided to hospitals in Ukraine and used to treat patients with critical injuries.
Tuberville has been <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/politics/24/03/37829749/senator-tommy-tubervilles-latest-2-stock-trades-attract-the-wrong-kind-of-attention-should-this-">flagged for unusual stock trading</a> in the past and remained one of the most active members of Congress buying and selling stocks and options.
A recent filing showed Tuberville buying stock in regional bank Southern States Bancshares Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SSBK#NASDAQ">SSBK</a>). The CEO of the company is a donor to Tuberville's senate campaign.
A&nbsp;<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/congress-stock-act-violations-senate-house-trading-2021-9#sen-tommy-tuberville-a-republican-from-alabama-2" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">report&nbsp;</a>from Business Insider said Tuberville was late in disclosing around 130 stock trades from January to May 2021.
A <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/09/13/us/politics/congress-stock-trading-investigation.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">report </a>from the New York Times highlighted Tuberville bought or sold stock and options in 17 companies that had business in front of Senate committees on which he served.
