Visa Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/V#NYSE">V</a>) recently reported impressive fiscal second quarter 2024 results, with net revenue increasing by 10% and payments volume growing by 8%. While these numbers may seem like a positive indicator for the economy, as they suggest strong consumer spending, a closer look at the current state of consumer credit card debt paints a more troubling picture.
According to the latest consumer debt data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Americans&#8217; total credit card balance has reached a staggering $1.129 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2023. This marks the third consecutive quarter in which credit card balances have surpassed the $1 trillion mark, a level never seen before the second quarter of 2023.
The recent increase in credit card debt is particularly concerning, as balances have risen by $273 billion since the fourth quarter of 2021. Mixed Performance:&nbsp;While the&nbsp;Elon Musk-led company missed expectations on both earnings and revenue for the third consecutive quarter, there were some bright spots.&nbsp;
The core auto gross margin exceeded analyst estimates, possibly due to one-time recognition of revenue from deferred full self-driving (FSD) sales, according to&nbsp;Gary Black&nbsp;of&nbsp;Future Fund. However, the company also reported a significant negative free cash flow.
Rallying Despite Misses:&nbsp;The premarket stock surge might be because the fundamental underperformance&nbsp;was already priced&nbsp;into the stock.
Positive Notes and Analyst Shifts:&nbsp;Despite analysts raising concerns about potentially&nbsp;negative&nbsp;sales growth in 2024, Musk maintained that sales will likely increase, albeit&nbsp;at a slower pace.&nbsp;
Investors also reacted favorably to his comments about launching the next generation of vehicles, including more affordable models, by early 2025 or even sooner.
However, a bearish analyst believes Tesla is abandoning plans for a low-cost EV and is instead focusing on cost-cutting measures for existing models.

In the Aerospace segment, orders in the quarter totaled $2.4 billion, growing backlog to $20.5 billion, up 6.2% from the year-ago quarter. Aerospace book-to-bill was 1.2-to-1 for the quarter.
In the defense segments, orders in the quarter totaled $8.8 billion, with particular strength in Combat Systems and Technologies, which had book-to-bill ratios of 1.6-to-1 and 1.2-to-1, respectively.
