<p>In June 2022, New York <strong>Gov. Kathy Hochul</strong> announced a deal had finally been reached to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/22/01/24932856/new-york-gov-kathy-hochul-pledges-200m-to-boost-social-equity-efforts-as-part-of-cannabis-legali">fund a $200 million public-private effort</a>, which would finance cannabis dispensaries run by the people who have been the most impacted by the war on drugs.</p>
<p>The much-anticipated public-private fund is now coming under scrutiny following an <a href="https://www.thecity.nyc/2024/04/24/cannabis-fund-social-equity-dispensary/">investigation</a> by THE CITY&#8217;s <strong>Rosalind Adams</strong>, which uncovered a "lopsided deal" favoring the private equity firm <strong>Chicago Atlantic Group</strong> and raising concerns about the state's social equity goals. </p>
<p>The agreement heavily favors Chicago Atlantic, leaving the state exposed to significant risks, noted the outlet.</p>
<p>Even the New York Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) cast doubts on the fund&#8217;s viability according to internal OCM documents that questioned whether the deal had overstated the potential revenue and profit potential.</p>
<h1 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What Happened</strong></h1>
<p>New York state, unable to secure a private equity partner, agreed to a $50 million loan from Chicago Atlantic at a 15% interest rate, with all risk borne by the state.</p>
<p>Critics, including Reinvent Albany, an organization that advocates for government transparency and accountability, deemed the deal to have been detrimental to the state and prospective dispensary owners. Legal experts and consultants likened it to distressed debt lending.</p>
<p>Despite the skepticism and advice against the arrangement, negotiations ultimately led to a secret agreement benefiting Chicago Atlantic.</p>
<p>Previously, THE CITY revealed how cannabis licensees who accept loans from the social equity fund are burdened with high construction costs that they don't control and with interest rates that exceed the state's initial estimates.</p>
<p>"Everyone is worried about defaulting because of the rules and regulations of this loan," said <strong>Roland Conner</strong>, who runs <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/23/01/30496199/ny-gov-hochul-announces-opening-of-first-cannabis-shop-owned-by-person-impacted-by-war-on-drugs">Smacked on Bleecker Street</a> in Greenwich Village, the first legal dispensary owned by a person affected by the drug war.</p>
<h1 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Who's Responsible?</strong></h1>
<p>Details of the deal are still secret, with New York state authorities denying Freedom of Information Law requests. The state comptroller&#8217;s office and key lawmakers say they were not informed or involved in the making of the deal, exposing a shocking lack of oversight.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Chicago Atlantic secured favorable terms, including leasing rights and a $100 million commitment for property development, raising yet more concerns about profiteering at the expense of marginalized communities.</p>
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Corruption Or Ineptitude?</h1>
<p>The handling of New York&#8217;s cannabis program seems to reflect a corrosive mix of both ineptitude and potential corruption. While officials may have sought to support marginalized groups, their actions suggest a lack of due diligence and transparency.</p>
<p>One element of the story, which you can read in full <a href="https://www.thecity.nyc/2024/04/24/cannabis-fund-social-equity-dispensary/">here</a>, is that social equity applicants are furious.</p>
<p>A Queens shop owner, <strong>Dalessio</strong>, who was awarded a retail license designated for people impacted by past drug convictions told THE CITY that after a year of back and forth with the fund, he walked away from the deal.</p>
<p>"It just left such a bad taste in my mouth. I warned everyone I could to stay away from this deal," he said.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s likely to be at least a year before any ban takes effect, with potential legal challenges possibly extending the timeline further. While TikTok has succeeded in court before, this marks a new challenge against federal legislation.</p>

<p>As inflation remains elevated, and as <a href="https://www.barrons.com/articles/fed-talk-powell-bostic-speech-rate-cut-inflation-dcf95f67">recent statements from Federal Reserve officials</a> suggest that the central bank is walking back its &ldquo;Fed pivot&rdquo; plans for 2024, high rates may persist longer than expected. In time, this could finally affect economic growth, affecting sectors most hard hit (like consumer discretionary) by such a change.</p>



<p>Alongside macro-related reasons, there are also company-specific reasons the short side is so heavy with certain consumer discretionary stocks. These include poor fundamentals, rich valuations, and other concerns that may snowball into major issues.</p>



<p>Below are the top seven consumer discretionary stocks short sellers are betting against. Let&rsquo;s take a closer look and see whether the bears are on the right or wrong side of the trade.</p>



<h2>Carvana (CVNA)</h2>

Carvana is an online-only used car dealer."><div>Source: Ken Wolter / Shutterstock.com</div></div><p>Rebounding twelvefold off its 52-week low, <strong>Carvana</strong> (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/cvna-stock-quote/"><strong>CVNA</strong></a>) has made short-squeeze traders very rich, but has caused billions in losses for the short-seller community. Yet while one would think this would scare off the bears, that hasn&rsquo;t been the case.</p>



<p>CVNA has continued to have high short interest. At present, around <a href="https://fintel.io/ss/us/cvna">33.8%</a> of the online used car retailer&rsquo;s outstanding float is sold short. While fading Carvana was a losing trade in 2023, and has stayed one thus far in 2024, those betting against that meme stock at today&rsquo;s price could have the last laugh.</p>



<p>While Carvana has been successful in its <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/news/4070713-carvana-shares-rally-company-nears-profitability">efforts to improve gross margins</a>, analyst consensus stills call for net losses to persist <a href="https://www.wsj.com/market-data/quotes/CVNA">through at least 2026</a>. Even if the company manages to hit the top end of estimates, and become consistently profitable, shares trade at a high multiple to peers based on these ambitious forecasts. </p>



<h2>Kura Sushi USA (KRUS)</h2>

<p>You don&rsquo;t have to look far to determine the bear case for KRUS stock. Yes, Kura Sushi appears to be growing at a rapid clip. Forecasts call for revenue to rise by around <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/KRUS/earnings">27%</a> next fiscal year (ending August 2025), and for earnings to more than double during that time frame.</p>



<p>However, a valuation of 296.2 times forward earnings is simply too rich, even when taking this fast growth into account. </p>



<p>More importantly, with shares &ldquo;priced to perfection&rdquo; to such a degree, there&rsquo;s a lot more out there that could knock KRUS lower rather than send it higher. Even the reporting of results in line with expectations could drive disappointment, leading to a heavy reversal for shares.</p>



<h2>Kohl&rsquo;s (KSS)</h2>

Shares in the department store chain trade at a low valuation of 10.6 times forward earnings. </p>



<p>With the company&rsquo;s fiscal performance already squeezed by high inflation, you may think that results could improve dramatically, if optimistic forecasts calling for easing inflation play out.</p>



<p>Add in other factors, like <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/news/4063389-kohls-gains-amid-report-activist-pushing-for-sale">activist investor involvement</a>, and you really think KSS stock is a deep value opportunity. However, while well-aware of these positives, the bears who have sold <a href="https://fintel.io/ss/us/kss">31.8%</a> of KSS&rsquo;s outstanding float believe several key negatives will make this would-be deep value play a value trap instead.</p>



<p>Based on the latest guidance, the company expects <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/kohls-posts-smaller-drop-holiday-quarter-sales-than-expected-2024-03-12/">further weak results in 2024</a>. As InvestorPlace&rsquo;s Jeremy Flint argued last month, in the years ahead, Kohl&rsquo;s could <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/03/edge-of-the-abyss-3-stocks-flirting-with-disaster/">end up going the way of <strong>Sears</strong></a>, because of its continued inability to become an omnichannel retailer.</p>



<h2>Luminar Technologies (LAZR)</h2>

Since then, though, these autonomous driving technology plays have fallen fully out of favor.</p>



<p>During this time frame, LAZR stock has fallen by more than 95%, to just over $2 per share. </p>



<p>While the short-side has already profited massively from this trade, many of them have yet to close out positions. At least, based upon the fact <a href="https://fintel.io/ss/us/lazr">26.9%</a> of LAZR&rsquo;s outstanding float remains sold short. Clearly, the shorts see Luminar falling towards zero. </p>



<p>Due to EV demand decline, ongoing high net losses, and dwindling cash, LAZR is a top target for short sellers. While you don&rsquo;t need to short it, take the hint: avoid at all costs.</p>



<h2>Lucid Group (LCID)</h2>

Shares in this early-stage EV manufacturer are in <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/03/7-nasdaq-stocks-to-sell-in-march-before-they-crash-burn/">a dilution spiral</a>. Lucid has failed to gain traction as a major EV brand. </p>



<p>Production and sales have both fallen far short of initial forecasts. Throw in the curveball of the aforementioned EV growth slump, and Lucid has reported consistently-high operating losses as a result. In order to cover these losses, the company has raised capital by selling additional shares of stock.</p>



<p>Primarily, to Lucid&rsquo;s majority owner, Saudi Arabia&rsquo;s Public Investment Fund (PIF). As the share count rises, while underlying results fail to improve, the per-share value of LCID stock has, and is likely to continue to, decline. With <a href="https://fintel.io/ss/us/lcid">28.9%</a> of LCID&rsquo;s outstanding float sold short, the short seller community has come to a similar conclusion about this down-and-out EV play.</p>



<h2>Lovesac (LOVE)</h2>

LOVE stock."><div>Source: JHVEPhoto / Shutterstock.com</div></div><p>Home furnishings company <strong>Lovesac</strong> (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/love-stock-quote/"><strong>LOVE</strong></a>) is one of the consumer discretionary stocks short sellers are betting against. 26.1% of outstanding float has been sold short.</p>



<p>Last summer, I argued that heavily-shorted LOVE stock was a situation where <a href="https://investorplace.com/2023/08/7-retail-stocks-due-for-a-massive-short-squeeze/">going long was a better move than going short</a>. </p>



<p>Lovesac appeared on track to beat expectations, and guide for better times ahead. However, while the company&rsquo;s fiscal results have beat <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/news/4043953-lovesac-jumps-10-after-stronger-than-anticipated-earnings-report">expectations in recent quarters</a>, analysts have walked back expectations for future results.</p>



<p>At one point forecasting earnings of $3 per share for the fiscal year ending January 2025, consensus now calls for earnings of $2.09 per share. Even this reduced forecast could be walked-back further. </p>



<p>As <em>InvestorPlace&rsquo;s</em> Matthew Farley pointed out last month, Lovesac keeps <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/03/3-sorry-retail-stocks-to-sell-in-march-while-you-still-can/">struggling to improve its margins</a>. Improved results for Loveac may also hinge heavily on a further &ldquo;soft landing&rdquo; for the U.S. economy.</p>



<h2>Wayfair (W)</h2>

For instance, on April 4, Evercore ISI&rsquo;s Oliver Wintermantel <a href="https://www.barrons.com/articles/wayfair-stock-new-bull-ad629033?mod=md_stockoverview_news">upgraded</a> the home furnishing online retailer&rsquo;s shares to &ldquo;outperform.&rdquo;</p>



<p>In Wintermantel&rsquo;s view, following the company&rsquo;s successful cost reduction efforts, it&rsquo;s well-positioned to report very strong results later this year, as the housing market recovers. </p>



<p>Yet while the Wall Street analyst community is warming back up to W stock, the same can&rsquo;t be said about the so-called &ldquo;smart money&rdquo; short-sellers.</p>



<p><a href="https://fintel.io/ss/us/w">23.6%</a> of W&rsquo;s outstanding float remains sold short. While not certain, this may be because, assuming a comeback does indeed arrive later this year, it&rsquo;s likely more than priced-in by now. </p>



<p>Shares today trade for around <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/W/earnings">60 times estimated 2024 earnings</a>, and nearly 30 times estimated 2025 earnings. If a late-2024 housing rebound fails to arrive, W may be at risk of a big correction.</p>

<h2>IAMGOLD (IAG)</h2>

While inflation remains stubborn, gold has inched towards $2,400 an ounce. Recently, Saxo Bank opined that the <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/news/4087501-gold-to-potentially-make-an-extension-towards-2500oz-saxo-bank">precious metal is likely to touch</a> $2,500 an ounce.</p>



<p>Among the high-potential penny stocks, <strong>IAMGOLD</strong> (NYSE:<span><a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/iag-stock-quote/"><strong>IAG</strong></a></span>) is worth grabbing at current levels around $3.80. The company has quality assets, strong fundamentals and the positive tailwind of gold upside. With higher realized prices, free cash flows are likely to increase and will support further growth.</p>



<p>From a financial perspective, IAMGOLD ended 2023 with a liquidity buffer of $754.1 million. The company has a <a href="https://s202.q4cdn.com/468687163/files/doc_presentations/2024/04/IAG-Corporate-Presentation-March_v1-1.pdf">strong pipeline of projects</a> that includes Gosselin, Nelligan and Chibougamau district. With the possibility of robust cash flows, there is ample flexibility for aggressive investment in exploration and development.</p>



<p>Further, the C&ocirc;t&eacute; Gold asset has been commercialized with initial production in March. The mine life of the asset extends until 2041. For the current year, IAMGOLD expects production of 220,000 to 290,000 ounces of gold from C&ocirc;t&eacute;. The production bump-up will ensure healthy revenue and EBITDA growth. With all these positives, I expect IAG stock to remain in an uptrend.</p>



<h2>Curaleaf Holdings (CURLF)</h2>

The rescheduling seems very likely in the coming months and will be a major catalyst for cannabis companies with strong U.S. presence.</p>



<p>With Presidential elections round the corner, there is a strong case for potential federal level legalization of cannabis next year. Amidst these positives and with regulatory headwinds waning in Europe, I am bullish on <a href="https://investorplace.com/industries/healthcare/cannabis/">cannabis stocks</a>. <strong>Curaleaf Holdings</strong> (OTCMKTS:<span><a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/curlf-stock-quote/"><strong>CURLF</strong></a></span>) stock trades just below $5 and is among the high-potential bets for multibagger returns.</p>



<p>The first positive is that Curaleaf is present in 17 states in the U.S. Further, the company has been aggressively <a href="https://filecache.investorroom.com/mr5ir_curaleaf/608/Curaleaf%20Investor%20Deck%203Q23.pdf">expanding presence</a> in the European markets with focus on the medicinal cannabis business. The addressable market is therefore significant for pursuing accelerated growth.</p>



<p>It&rsquo;s worth noting that Curaleaf has indicated that 2024 is likely to be a &ldquo;<a href="https://ir.curaleaf.com/2024-03-06-Curaleaf-Reports-Fourth-Quarter-and-Full-Year-Ended-2023-Results">catalyst year</a>&rdquo; for the company. It&rsquo;s therefore likely that growth will accelerate after being subdued last year. At the same time, Curaleaf has been delivering robust EBITDA margin and improved cash flows.</p>



<h2>Joby Aviation (JOBY)</h2>

The market potential is however huge with estimates pointing to a market size of $9 trillion by 2050. Of course, that&rsquo;s more than two decades away. However, the key point is that the industry will continue to grow at a steady pace. Further, early movers with a good management and focus on innovation will create massive wealth.</p>



<p><strong>Joby Aviation</strong> (NYSE:<span><a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/joby-stock-quote/"><strong>JOBY</strong></a></span>) is among the <a href="https://investorplace.com/industries/consumer-discretionary/automotive/flying-cars/">flying car stocks</a> with high-potential. JOBY stock has been largely subdued with an upside of 13% in the last 12 months. However, with steady business progress, I believe that the stock is poised for a big breakout rally.</p>



<p>In February, Joby announced the <a href="https://ir.jobyaviation.com/news-events/press-releases/detail/88/joby-completes-third-stage-of-faa-certification-process">completion of third stage of certification</a> from the Federal Aviation Authority. With two more stages of certification due, it&rsquo;s likely that commercialization of eVTOL will happen in 2025.</p>



<p>In anticipation of this, the company has <a href="https://ir.jobyaviation.com/news-events/press-releases/detail/90/joby-acquires-facility-in-ohio-begins-hiring-to-support">acquired facility in Ohio</a>. The facility will support building 500 aircraft annually. The company&rsquo;s first international market will be Dubai where an <a href="https://ir.jobyaviation.com/news-events/press-releases/detail/89/joby-aviation-reports-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-2023">exclusive agreement</a> has been signed to operate air taxis in the Emirate for six years.</p>

<h2>Carvana (CVNA)</h2>

Carvana is an online-only used car dealer."><div>Source: Ken Wolter / Shutterstock.com</div></div><p>Rebounding twelvefold off its 52-week low, <strong>Carvana</strong> (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/cvna-stock-quote/"><strong>CVNA</strong></a>) has made short-squeeze traders very rich, but has caused billions in losses for the short-seller community. Yet while one would think this would scare off the bears, that hasn&rsquo;t been the case.</p>



<p>CVNA has continued to have high short interest. At present, around <a href="https://fintel.io/ss/us/cvna">33.8%</a> of the online used car retailer&rsquo;s outstanding float is sold short. While fading Carvana was a losing trade in 2023, and has stayed one thus far in 2024, those betting against that meme stock at today&rsquo;s price could have the last laugh.</p>



<p>While Carvana has been successful in its <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/news/4070713-carvana-shares-rally-company-nears-profitability">efforts to improve gross margins</a>, analyst consensus stills call for net losses to persist <a href="https://www.wsj.com/market-data/quotes/CVNA">through at least 2026</a>. Even if the company hits the top end of estimates, and become consistently profitable, shares trade at a high multiple to peers based on these ambitious forecasts. </p>



<h2>Kura Sushi USA (KRUS)</h2>



<div><img width="300" height="169" src="https://investorplace.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/sushi1600-300x169.jpg" alt="Two rolls of sushi on a platter."><div>Source: Shutterstock</div></div><p><strong>Kura Sushi USA</strong> (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/krus-stock-quote/"><strong>KRUS</strong></a>) is another of the top consumer discretionary stocks short sellers are betting against. <a href="https://fintel.io/ss/us/krus">24.7%</a> of the revolving sushi bar operator&rsquo;s outstanding shares have been sold short.</p>



<p>You don&rsquo;t have to look far to determine the bear case for KRUS stock. Yes, Kura Sushi appears to be growing at a rapid clip. Forecasts call for revenue to rise by around <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/KRUS/earnings">27%</a> next fiscal year (ending August 2025), and for earnings to more than double during that time frame.</p>



<p>However, a valuation of 296.2 times forward earnings is simply too rich, even when taking this fast growth into account. </p>



<p>More importantly, with shares &ldquo;priced to perfection&rdquo; to such a degree, there&rsquo;s a lot more out there that could knock KRUS lower rather than send it higher. Even the reporting of results in line with expectations could drive disappointment, leading to a heavy reversal for shares.</p>



<h2>Kohl&rsquo;s (KSS)</h2>

Shares in the department store chain trade at a low valuation of 10.6 times forward earnings. </p>



<p>With the company&rsquo;s fiscal performance already squeezed by high inflation, you may think that results could improve dramatically, if optimistic forecasts calling for easing inflation play out.</p>



<p>Add in other factors, like <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/news/4063389-kohls-gains-amid-report-activist-pushing-for-sale">activist investor involvement</a>, and you really think KSS stock is a deep value opportunity. However, while well-aware of these positives, the bears who have sold <a href="https://fintel.io/ss/us/kss">31.8%</a> of KSS&rsquo;s outstanding float believe several key negatives will make this would-be deep value play a value trap instead.</p>



<p>Based on the latest guidance, the company expects <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/kohls-posts-smaller-drop-holiday-quarter-sales-than-expected-2024-03-12/">further weak results in 2024</a>. As InvestorPlace&rsquo;s Jeremy Flint argued last month, in the years ahead, Kohl&rsquo;s could <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/03/edge-of-the-abyss-3-stocks-flirting-with-disaster/">end up going the way of <strong>Sears</strong></a>, because of its continued inability to become an omnichannel retailer.</p>



<h2>Luminar Technologies (LAZR)</h2>

Since then, though, these autonomous driving technology plays have fallen fully out of favor.</p>



<p>During this time frame, LAZR stock has fallen by more than 95%, to just over $2 per share. </p>



<p>While the short-side has already profited massively from this trade, many of them have yet to close out positions. At least, based upon the fact <a href="https://fintel.io/ss/us/lazr">26.9%</a> of LAZR&rsquo;s outstanding float remains sold short. Clearly, the shorts see Luminar falling towards zero. </p>



<p>Due to EV demand decline, ongoing high net losses, and dwindling cash, LAZR is a top target for short sellers. While you don&rsquo;t need to short it, take the hint: avoid at all costs.</p>



<h2>Lucid Group (LCID)</h2>

Shares in this early-stage EV manufacturer are in <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/03/7-nasdaq-stocks-to-sell-in-march-before-they-crash-burn/">a dilution spiral</a>. Lucid has failed to gain traction as a major EV brand. </p>



<p>Production and sales have both fallen far short of initial forecasts. Throw in the curveball of the aforementioned EV growth slump, and Lucid has reported consistently high operating losses as a result. In order to cover these losses, the company has raised capital by selling additional shares of stock.</p>



<p>Primarily, to Lucid&rsquo;s majority owner, Saudi Arabia&rsquo;s Public Investment Fund. As the share count rises, while underlying results don&rsquo;t improve, the per-share value of LCID stock has, and is likely to continue to, decline. With <a href="https://fintel.io/ss/us/lcid">28.9%</a> of LCID&rsquo;s outstanding float sold short, the short seller community has come to a similar conclusion about this down-and-out EV play.</p>



<h2>Lovesac (LOVE)</h2>

LOVE stock."><div>Source: JHVEPhoto / Shutterstock.com</div></div><p>Home furnishings company <strong>Lovesac</strong> (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/love-stock-quote/"><strong>LOVE</strong></a>) is one of the consumer discretionary stocks short sellers are betting against. 26.1% of outstanding float has been sold short.</p>



<p>Last summer, I argued that heavily-shorted LOVE stock was a situation where <a href="https://investorplace.com/2023/08/7-retail-stocks-due-for-a-massive-short-squeeze/">going long was a better move than going short</a>. </p>



<p>Lovesac appeared on track to beat expectations, and guide for better times ahead. However, while the company&rsquo;s fiscal results have beat <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/news/4043953-lovesac-jumps-10-after-stronger-than-anticipated-earnings-report">expectations in recent quarters</a>, analysts have walked back expectations for future results.</p>



<p>At one point forecasting earnings of $3 per share for the fiscal year ending January 2025, consensus now calls for earnings of $2.09 per share. Even this reduced forecast could be walked-back further. </p>



<p>As <em>InvestorPlace&rsquo;s</em> Matthew Farley pointed out last month, Lovesac keeps <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/03/3-sorry-retail-stocks-to-sell-in-march-while-you-still-can/">struggling to improve its margins</a>. Improved results for Loveac may also hinge heavily on a further &ldquo;soft landing&rdquo; for the U.S. economy.</p>



<h2>Wayfair (W)</h2>

For instance, on April 4, Evercore ISI&rsquo;s Oliver Wintermantel <a href="https://www.barrons.com/articles/wayfair-stock-new-bull-ad629033?mod=md_stockoverview_news">upgraded</a> the home furnishing online retailer&rsquo;s shares to &ldquo;outperform.&rdquo;</p>



<p>In Wintermantel&rsquo;s view, following the company&rsquo;s successful cost reduction efforts, it&rsquo;s well-positioned to report very strong results later this year, as the housing market recovers. </p>



<p>Yet while the Wall Street analyst community is warming back up to W stock, the same can&rsquo;t be said about the so-called &ldquo;smart money&rdquo; short-sellers.</p>



<p>Wayfair has a <a href="https://fintel.io/ss/us/w">23.6%</a> outstanding float sold short. While not certain, this may be because, assuming a comeback does indeed arrive later this year, it&rsquo;s likely more than priced-in by now. </p>



<p>Shares today trade for around <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/W/earnings">60 times estimated 2024 earnings</a>, and nearly 30 times estimated 2025 earnings. If a late-2024 housing rebound fails to arrive, W may be at risk of a big correction.</p>

The company transports goods around the country, notably shipping containers from the nation&rsquo;s ports. The company also operates a household moving service. The company is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, employs 23,000 people, and has&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.marketbeat.com/instant-alerts/nasdaq-odfl-boost-price-target-2024-04-15/">annual revenues</a>&nbsp;of more than $4 billion.&nbsp;</p>



<p>ODFL stock has been a long-term and consistent compounder for shareholders, having risen 11% this year, 30% in the last 12 months, and 330% over the past five years. Key to Old Dominion&rsquo;s success has been its steady and careful growth, along with consistently strong financial results. Old Dominion Freight Line just completed&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/old-dominion-freight-line-declares-162500192.html">a two-for-one stock split</a>&nbsp;on March 27, making the shares more affordable for investors to buy. ODFL stock also pays a quarterly dividend of 26 cents a share for a yield of 0.47%.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Revenue in the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/04/10/delta-air-lines-dal-q1-2024-earnings.html#:~:text=Delta's%20adjusted%20earnings%20of%20%24288,and%20slightly%20below%20analysts'%20expectations.">first quarter of 2024</a>&nbsp;totaled $12.56 billion, slightly below Wall Street forecasts of $12.59 billion but a first-quarter record for the company. In releasing its Q1 results, Delta said that it is benefitting from strong bookings for both leisure and business travel as we progress through 2024. For all of this year, Delta reiterated its full-year forecast of $6 to $7 a share in earnings and free cash flow of $3 billion to $4 billion. DAL stock is up 35% over the last 12 months, including a 15% gain this year.&nbsp;</p>



<h2>Carvana (CVNA)</h2>

So far this year, CVNA stock is up 44%, including a 33% gain after the used car retailer reported its&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/02/22/carvana-shares-soar-after-company-says-it-expects-core-profit-over-100-million-in-q1.html#:~:text=The%20company%20reported%20a%20net,of%20%241.59%20billion%20in%202022.">first-ever profit</a>&nbsp;in February. Investors stood up and cheered after the company announced a profit of $450 million for all of 2023. In 2022, Carvana reported a loss of $1.59 billion. The company also forecast a profit for this year&rsquo;s first quarter of about $100 million. Carvana reports Q1 results on May 1.&nbsp;</p>



<p>To reach profitability, Carvana cut costs by lowering its inventory and reducing its advertising budget. The company, which allows customers to buy cars online, was popular during Covid-19 lockdowns but has struggled coming out of the pandemic. The company said in its last earnings print that it expects the number of used vehicles it sells in Q1 of this year to be higher than last year. To be sure, CVNA stock remains volatile, but its&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.investors.com/news/carvana-stock-carvana-earnings-acv-auctions-stock-soars/">growth over the past year</a>&nbsp;has been hard to ignore.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Volatility is rising in the stock market. Between the recent hot inflation data and mounting geopolitical tensions, investors are starting to reassess the broader economic environment. </p>



<p>It seems that the Federal Reserve might not come through with previously anticipated interest rate cuts. This, in turn, has the potential to greatly reduce the speculative juices in the stock market. Throw in some softness in leading <a href="https://investorplace.com/industries/technology/artificial-intelligence/">AI stocks</a>, and the market&rsquo;s red flags are mounting.</p>



<p>Investors should be repositioning their portfolios accordingly. Some of the companies at highest risk today are those that have weak fundamentals. Rather, their shares have found support primarily due to meme trading, short squeezes and other such exogenous factors. </p>



<p>But the stock market&rsquo;s bull run is now in danger. It&rsquo;s time to throttle back risk exposure, making it an opportune moment to sell these three <a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-types/meme-stocks/">meme stocks</a> before they utterly implode like <strong>AMC Entertainment</strong> (NYSE:<span><a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/amc-stock-quote/"><strong>AMC</strong></a></span>).</p>



<h2>Carvana (CVNA)</h2>

Simply incredible stuff. </p>



<p>Unfortunately, there&rsquo;s scant little fundamental cause to justify a move of any such magnitude. Carvana, as a retailer with its unique car vending machines, has created a distinct marketplace for used cars. It also purchases used vehicles directly from individuals, sometimes at <a href="https://www.theverge.com/22923871/carvana-pandemic-used-car-prices-sold-online-chip-shortage">surprisingly high prices</a>.</p>



<p>If operated judiciously, this business model might be a winner. But, the issue is that the firm is incredibly levered and barely profitable. In fact, it had to fight off <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/02/02/carvana-leaner-and-ready-for-wall-street-redemption.html">bankruptcy concerns</a> not too long ago. Carvana barely squeezed out a small profit last year despite an exceptionally favorable car market and elevated levels of consumer spending.</p>



<p>Given high interest rates and the potential for significantly declining consumer discretionary spending, it seems Carvana probably has already enjoyed the best market conditions it could hope for. If it couldn&rsquo;t squirrel away large profits when the sun was shining, a storm could devastate the firm. Things are likely to get worse from here, and analysts agree. They model Carvana falling back into <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/CVNA/earnings/estimates">loss-making territory</a> this year. Furthermore, analysts expect Carvana to generate large losses in 2025 and 2026 as well.</p>



<p>In addition, the stock has been bolstered by a massive short squeeze. <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/CVNA/short-interest">32% of the float</a> has been sold short and that&rsquo;s rocket fuel on the way up. But this factor could lead to an equally rapid descent when momentum runs in reverse. </p>



<h2>Beyond Meat (BYND)</h2>

Schneider / Shutterstock.com</div></div><p>Years ago, <strong>Beyond Meat</strong> (NASDAQ:<span><a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/bynd-stock-quote/"><strong>BYND</strong></a></span>) was a hot new IPO that sought to revolutionize the protein market. Many people thought plant-based burgers and sausages would be a serious competitive threat to traditional animal meats as time went on. </p>



<p>This is becoming increasingly less likely. Beyond Meat&rsquo;s partnerships with restaurants largely <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2022/07/28/beyond-meat-stock-falls-after-conclusion-of-mcdonalds-mcplant-test.html">failed</a> to move the needle. Sales at grocery stores have also <a href="https://www.thestreet.com/restaurants/beyond-meat-responds-to-low-sales-and-customers-may-not-like-it">declined</a> as Beyond Meat has struggled to find traction outside of its dedicated, but small, vegan and vegetarian fanbase.</p>



<p>Simply put, alternative proteins haven&rsquo;t found the right product, quality and price mix to garner significant market adoption from omnivores. Beyond Meat has always had massive overhead and low operating margins, resulting in the company losing hundreds of millions of dollars per year.</p>



<p>That was somewhat acceptable when revenues were rising and Beyond Meat could hope to reach operating scale and overcome its financial travails. </p>



<p>Now, though, the bloom is off the rose. Beyond Meat&rsquo;s revenues plunged from $465 million in 2021 to just $343 million in 2023. Analysts expect another decline to $329 million in 2024.</p>



<p>BYND stock soared on <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/02/why-is-beyond-meat-bynd-stock-up-62-today/">a short squeeze</a> earlier this year, but it&rsquo;s already given back those gains, and there&rsquo;s little fundamental reason for optimism. Traders should look to exit this meme stock before it goes from bad to worse.</p>



<h2>Joby Aviation (JOBY)</h2>

Schneider / Shutterstock.com</div></div><p><strong>Joby Aviation</strong> (NYSE:<span><a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/joby-stock-quote/"><strong>JOBY</strong></a></span>) is a venture stage company attempting to commercialize electric vehicles for short range flights. The idea is that passengers can use Joby vehicles to get from an airport to a destination close to their house or office, for example.</p>



<p>In theory, this sort of electric vehicle could transform the <a href="https://www.afar.com/magazine/what-exactly-are-air-taxis-and-where-are-they">urban taxi market</a>, at least on certain popular high-volume routes. However, it remains to be seen if these sorts of vehicles will be more commercially viable than helicopters. </p>



<p>Needless to say, private helicopters services have existed for decades and remain a niche. It seems there simply aren&rsquo;t that many consumers that have the money or the willingness to pay for short range private flights. </p>



<p>Joby and other eVTOL players are hoping that the electrification of the private aircraft will lead to adoption as it can address some noise and environmental concerns. But commercial proof of concept remains lacking. Additionally, short sellers have taken Joby to task <a href="https://investorplace.com/2023/10/kerrisdale-slams-joby-aviation-joby-stock-in-new-short-report/">citing concerns</a> both on the cost of the vehicles and with eventual passenger demand.</p>



<p>Despite having virtually no revenues and losing approximately $500 million per year, Joby retains a massive market capitalization. Simply put, a $3 billion market cap is a gigantic speculative bet on a company that may well not amount to much in the end. Put another way, traders should get out of JOBY stock before the broader economy turns downward and these sorts of highly speculative concept stocks totally implode.</p>
