<p><i>One of North America's largest commercial nuclear manufacturers to get even bigger, driven by increasing demand for clean nuclear energy</i></p>
<p>BWX Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BWXT#NYSE">BWXT</a>) announced today an investment to expand its Cambridge manufacturing plant. Already one of the largest nuclear commercial manufacturing facilities in North America, the site's increased footprint will enable greater capacity to support ongoing and anticipated customers' investments in Small Modular Reactors, traditional large-scale nuclear and advanced reactors, in Canada and around the world.</p>
<p>The expansion, estimated to cost C$50 million, will increase the facility's footprint 25 percent to 280,000 square feet. Additionally, over the next few years, BWXT will invest approximately C$30 million in advanced manufacturing equipment for the facility that has designed and manufactured hundreds of large nuclear components. This total estimated C$80 million investment will increase capacity significantly, improve productivity and create more than 200 long-term jobs for skilled workers, engineers and support staff in the area.</p>
<p>John MacQuarrie, president of Commercial Operations, BWXT, stated, "Our expansion comes at a time when we're supporting our customers in the successful execution of some of the largest clean nuclear energy projects in the world. At the same time, the global nuclear industry is increasingly being called upon to mitigate the impacts of climate change and increase energy security and independence. By investing significantly in our Cambridge manufacturing facility, BWXT is further positioning our business to serve our customers to produce more safe, clean and reliable electricity in Canada and abroad."</p>
<p>Construction for the BWXT Cambridge Expansion Project is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2024, adjacent to the existing plant, with no interruption to ongoing operations at the current facility. The project is estimated to be completed by the middle of 2026.</p>
<p>Additionally, BWXT's Projects and Field Services business will relocate to a stand-alone 150,000 square foot facility in Kitchener, Ont. The facility in Kitchener will be a state-of -the-art center for training, dynamic learning and technology development supporting the growth of the company's nuclear business.</p>

A recent report by Grid Strategies, a power sector consulting company, estimated that yearly electricity demand is set to grow by 0.9%, while the capacity added to the grid is planned to increase by just 0.5%,&rdquo; Fortune reported on March 22.</p>




<p>The largest nuclear energy-specific ETF is the <strong>VanEck Uranium+Nuclear Energy ETF </strong>(NYSEARCA:<span><a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/nlr-stock-quote/"><strong>NLR</strong></a></span>), which has <a href="https://www.vaneck.com/us/en/investments/uranium-nuclear-energy-etf-nlr/overview/">$153 million</a> in net assets. Founded in August 2007, the surge in energy demand has attracted new investors to the 17-year-old fund.&nbsp;</p>



<p>NLR tracks the performance of the <strong>MVIS Global Uranium &amp; Nuclear Energy Index</strong>, which is a collection of companies involved in uranium mining, constructing and maintaining nuclear reactors, producing electricity from nuclear sources, and equipment providers for the nuclear power industry.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Based in Baltimore, it aims to eliminate 100% of its greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, utilizing various forms of clean energy production, including America&rsquo;s largest fleet of carbon-free nuclear power plants.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The company&rsquo;s nuclear fleet has <a href="https://investors.constellationenergy.com/static-files/6426042e-4ff0-404a-8543-122ffbfbec66">production contracts</a> with 100% certainty into 2029, including fuel cycle contracts into the 2030s.&nbsp; These facilities operate at approximately 95% capacity, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 251 million metric tons.</p>



<p>Nuclear energy has a much higher capacity factor than any other form of clean energy, including hydroelectric, solar, wind, and thermal. Nuclear facilities also have much longer lifespans, improving the long-term return on investment.</p>



<p>Compared to its competitors, CEG has a much higher nuclear capacity, with 22.1 gigawatts (GWs), than the next five U.S. utilities with nuclear power combined.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Constellation has a 21% market share in the Commercial &amp; Industrial market, 400 basis points higher than <strong>NRG Energy </strong>(NYSE:<span><a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/nrg-stock-quote/"><strong>NRG</strong></a></span>), its closest competitor in this competitive market.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Its shares are up more than 66% year-to-date.&nbsp;</p>



<h2>Cameco (CCJ)&nbsp;</h2>

<p>Cameco sells uranium and fuel services products to nuclear utilities in <a href="https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/assets-us-west-2/annual/cameco-2023-annual-report.pdf">15 countries</a>, including the U.S. It explores and mines uranium, refines it, and converts it into other materials, such as CANDU fuel for heavy water reactors.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In November 2023, it acquired 49% of a joint venture with <strong>Brookfield Asset Management </strong>(NYSE:<span><a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/bam-stock-quote/"><strong>BAM</strong></a></span>) to acquire 100% of Westinghouse Electric Company, which designs, constructs, and operates nuclear power plants. The joint venture acquired the company for <a href="https://www.cameco.com/media/news/cameco-and-brookfield-complete-acquisition-of-westinghouse-electric-company">$7.9 billion</a>, including the assumption of debt.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Westinghouse has approximately 50% market share in the nuclear reactor business with facilities in 20 different countries.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In 2024, Cameco expects its share of Westinghouse&rsquo;s adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) to be $477.5 million at the midpoint of its guidance.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In 2023, Cameco&rsquo;s revenue was 2.59 billion Canadian dollars ($1.98 billion), 39% higher than a year earlier, with adjusted EBITDA of 831 million Canadian dollars ($612 million), 93% higher than in 2022.</p>



<p>It&rsquo;s not surprising that its shares have risen 310% over the past five years. Net zero emissions cannot happen without nuclear power.</p>



<h2>BWX Technologies (BWXT)</h2>

<p>Over more than 60 years, BWX has delivered over <a href="https://www.bwxt.com/">400 nuclear reactors</a> to power nuclear submarines and 315 steam generators to nuclear power plants while also operating 12 nuclear facilities for the U.S. Department of Energy.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The company&rsquo;s business is divided into <a href="https://d18rn0p25nwr6d.cloudfront.net/CIK-0001486957/042011f5-e5ab-4623-8155-1a092f2c33af.pdf">two reportable segments</a>: Government Operations and Commercial Operations. In 2023, Government Operations accounted for 81% of its $2.50 billion in revenue, 12% higher than in 2022. Its Government Operations generated 91% of its $393.3 million operating income in terms of operating profits.</p>




<p>&ldquo;Looking ahead, we expect the momentum from 2023 to carry into 2024 and more than offset the anticipated lull in aircraft carrier propulsion systems production, as other elements of our nuclear portfolio gather strength,&rdquo; CEO Rex D. Geveden stated in its Q4 2023 <a href="https://s2.q4cdn.com/477932843/files/doc_financials/2023/q4/BWXT-4Q23-Earnings-Release_FINAL.pdf">press release</a>.</p>




<p>As a result, it expects to earn $3.13 a share at the midpoint of its 2024 guidance. Its stock isn&rsquo;t cheap at 31.9x those earnings.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Of the eight analysts who cover its stock, five rate it a Buy. Their target price is $109.50, about 10% higher than where it&rsquo;s currently trading.&nbsp;</p>



<p>With its Commercial Operations expected to grow faster than its Government Operations in 2024, it should become more balanced in the years ahead.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In his 1973 speech, President Richard Nixon envisioned a plan to build 1,000 nuclear power plants under the &ldquo;Project Independence&rdquo; initiative, laying the groundwork for the emergence of nuclear power stocks. Under the plan, already in the 1980s, the US would&rsquo;ve been completely energy self-sufficient.</p>



<p>But as it stands now, the US only has <a href="https://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.php?id=207&amp;t=21" target="_blank">54</a> nuclear power plants. However, as renewable energy continues to prove itself unreliable, drastically less dense and <a href="https://www.economist.com/finance-and-economics/2023/09/21/renewable-energy-has-hidden-costs" target="_blank">rife with hidden costs</a>, nuclear power is gaining traction as a reliable carbon-free source.</p>



<p>Showing this revitalization, <strong>VanEck Uranium+Nuclear Energy ETF</strong> (NYSEARCA:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/nlr-stock-quote/"><strong>NLR</strong></a>) is up 40% over one year. With the ongoing deployment of energy hungry AI infrastructure, the gains in the nuclear power sector are likely to continue.</p>



<p>Let&rsquo;s take a look at the top three nuclear power stocks primed for further growth.</p>



<h2>Denison Mines (DNN)</h2>

These terms suggest significant potential and indicate that the asset is not yet fully valued.</p>



<p>This Canadian uranium exploration and development company holds near total (90%) interest in the Wheeler River project. Located in Athabasca Basin, the site was deemed to hold proven &amp; probable reserves of 56.7 million lbs U3O3 (uranium trioxide). For comparison, an average nuclear power plant needs around 59k lbs of uranium trioxide annually.</p>



<p>In addition to this project, which is projected to have a base case operating profit margin of <a href="https://denisonmines.com/projects/core-projects/wheeler-river-project/" target="_blank">90.9%</a>, Denison Mines has a 22.5% stake in McClean Lake with an already operating uranium mill. Both Cameco and Kazatomprom are in business with Denison Mines, making it one of key uranium supply chain companies.</p>



<p>For investors seeking cheap nuclear power exposure, DNN stock also comes in handy as a penny stock. Per Nasdaq data, the average DNN price target is $2.54 vs current $2.11 per share. Interestingly, the low estimate of $2.17 is lower than its present price level.&nbsp;</p>



<h2>Duke Energy Corporation (DUK)</h2>

As a large utility company, it has the inherent stability needed to endure periods of inflation or high interest rates. This resilience is largely due to its ability to pass on increased costs to consumers, who consistently require electricity regardless of economic conditions.</p>



<p>For the long term future, Duke is investigating the deployment of small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs). The European Commission <a href="https://energy.ec.europa.eu/topics/nuclear-energy/small-modular-reactors_en" target="_blank">declared SMRs</a> as key contributors to 2040 climate targets. Duke&rsquo;s CEO Lynn Good sees SMRs as a potential jumping board to &ldquo;invest at the commercial scale necessary to make a difference&rdquo;.</p>



<p>In the meantime, Duke Energy serves 8.2 million US customers, generating 28.4% of energy needs from nuclear power in 2023. In its annual <a href="https://s201.q4cdn.com/583395453/files/doc_financials/2024/ar/2023-annual-report.pdf" target="_blank">2023 earnings report</a>, Good emphasized the Treasury&rsquo;s nuclear production tax credit (<span>PTC</span>) in 2024, noting that &ldquo;these <span>PTCs </span>could be worth several hundred million dollars per year&rdquo;.</p>



<p>If regulatory requirements are more aligned with American energy needs, Duke would be best positioned as the largest nuclear operator in the US. Overall, investors should view DUK exposure as safe nuclear and renewable dividend stock. Although DUK shares gained only 5% of value over five years, its dividend payouts continue to rise, now at <a href="https://tokenist.com/three-stocks-worth-holding-if-rates-stay-higher-for-longer/" target="_blank">$4.10 annual dividend per share</a>.</p>

For this reason, the company receives the bulk of revenue from government contracts, particularly to supply the US Navy with nuclear propulsion.</p>



<p>The nuclear engineering company gained 48% value over one year. YTD, the stock went up 24%, owing to an 18% spike from February to March to its new all-time high of $105.36. From the present price of $94.56, BWXT stock is 36% away from its 52-week low of $60.17 per share.</p>



<p>The culprit for that sharp rise in evaluation is the company&rsquo;s <a href="https://s2.q4cdn.com/477932843/files/doc_financials/2023/q4/BWXT-4Q23-Earnings-Presentation-FINAL.pdf" target="_blank">Q4 2023 earnings</a> report, having tracked 16% revenue growth, at a record $2.5 billion. It bears noticing that Bwx has consistent free cash flow levels, both ~$200 million in Q1 2023 and Q4 2022 respectively.</p>



<p>In the latest quarter, Bwx reported $212 million, with 2024 guidance for $225 &ndash; $250 million. Investors should view BWXT exposure as a proxy to the US nuclear naval power that upholds the dominance of the dollar. For that reason, its 30-day slump of 7.5% is likely a buying on the weakness opportunity.</p>



<p>Per Nasdaq&rsquo;s aggregated forecast data, the average BWXT price target is $105 vs current $94.56. The lowest estimate is $75 vs $123 for the high estimate twelve months ahead.</p>
