Organization sets legislative agenda, announces professional development program with Freddie Mac, plans mentoring initiatives for young professionals, and offers new development tools for membership

WASHINGTON, Nov. 1, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The National Association of Mortgage Brokers (NAMB), the voice of the mortgage industry representing the interests of mortgage professionals and home buyers since 1973, plans for an extensive agenda for 2023, the organization's 50 year anniversary. This includes a detailed legislative effort, professional development program in partnership with Freddie Mac, and an increased focus on developing young leaders within the marketplace.

The organization recently held its successful NAMB National, which featured many educational break-out sessions, professional development tracks, networking opportunities for 2,100 industry professionals and support for ALL brokers. During the conference, the organization also named its new executive board of directors for 2023: Ernest Jones Jr. (Board President) Valerie Saunders (President-Elect), James Nabor (Vice President), Rocke Andrews (Treasurer), Lauren Patterson (Secretary) and Linda McCoy (Immediate Past President).

"I am honored to hold the title of board president of NAMB, an organization that provides the most prominent tools and advocacy for the mortgage marketplace," said Ernest Jones Jr. newly appointed board president. "The work NAMB has conducted is critical and will continue to ensure the ongoing development of the industry and I am grateful for the opportunity to help lead our broad agenda forward now and through 2023; our 50th anniversary year."

A key initiative over the next 12 months will be the launch of a professional development roadshow with Freddie Mac. Together members of NAMB and representatives from Freddie Mac will host several one-day events nationwide and co-present materials where Freddie Mac can help educate attendees on its programs including affordable housing while NAMB will offer classes for members to gain continuing education credits, certifications within topics such as VA lending and more.

"NAMB is passionate about its relationship with Freddie Mac and its ability to offer outstanding educational opportunities for members. We look forward to announcing the roadshow dates to the public very soon," added Jones Jr.

Additionally, NAMB will continue to be the voice of the marketplace to lawmakers as it plans a detailed legislative agenda including, but not limited to, supporting these initiatives:

  • Supporting the Trigger Leads Prohibition Act H.R.5720 (H.R. 5720) that will protect consumers from having their data sold to companies who have no relationship or transactional connection to the consumer. NAMB believes contacting the consumer during the complex mortgage process could be harmful and confusing and opens up the possibility of fraud and unfair and deceptive activity.
  • Working with lawmakers on the 3% Qualified Mortgage (QM) calculations. NAMB supports the removal of the 3% cap on mortgage broker company payments that are already included in the rate set by the lender/creditor.
  • The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. NAMB believes there are types of expenses that can be significant for mortgage loan originators who act much more like independent contractors than employees. Prior to the tax law change, mortgage loan originators were W-2 employees and could deduct unreimbursed business expenses on IRS Schedule 2106. NAMB wishes to help expand Statutory Employee criteria to include Mortgage Loan Originators who are in a very comparable tax position as insurance agents.

"In addition to our robust legislative agenda where we will work diligently to enact change for the betterment of the marketplace, we will be working equally as hard to deepen our relationships government agencies to find new pathways for NAMB to support lawmakers as we collectively pave the way to increase flexibility for our members, consumers and the overall industry," added Jones Jr.

Professional development and mentoring of young professionals interested in working in the mortgage industry remains a critical component of NAMB's work. In the coming year, the organization will utilize its many assets to encourage young people to look deeply into career opportunities.

"It is an ongoing effort to increase our membership across the United States. Part of this effort will be leveraging those who have served the marketplace for 20+ years to meet and mentor young people who are interested in becoming career professionals within the mortgage industry and participate in NAMB. We will leverage many one-on-one meeting opportunities along with advanced social media initiatives to speak to young people where they consume occupation-based information. This is an exciting effort for me personally as these efforts will ensure the viability of the marketplace and create a new generation of professionals for consumers to trust well into the future," said Jones. Jr.

Also, NAMB will host many events, podcasts, webinars, and additional professional development opportunities for its members through 2023 leading up to the next NAMB National slated for the fall of 2023. For those interested in learning more about these items, click here.
