Defense TechConnect's six Innovation Challenges feature "Shark Tank"-style pitches by startups, universities and national labs competing for more than $500,000 in total prizes and access to more than $50 billion in prototype-level contracting authority for government customers.

WASHINGTON (PRWEB) September 29, 2022

Advanced Technology International (ATI), TechConnect and four medtech industry consortia today announced the seven winners of the 2022 Medical Innovation Challenge as well as an eighth winner from innovations created by students. Selected from a field of 25 finalists, winners were presented a total $250,000 in cash prizes at the Defense TechConnect (DTC) Innovation Summit & Expo, the nation's largest annual gathering of non-traditional, dual-use emerging technologies aligned with government priority requirements.

Each winner presented its innovation during the conference's "Shark Tank"-style pitching; finalists were given eight minutes to present to industry and government leadership aligned with participating contracting vehicles.

The seven winners and their innovation challenges are:

  • Darwin Biosciences, Inc., Boulder, Colo.: A portable, saliva-based diagnostic tool for the pre-symptomatic detection of infection, called SickStick, that reads molecules in human saliva derived from the earliest immune response.
  • Limax Biosciences, Inc., Somerville, Mass.: An innovative, degradable, adhesive hydrogel for advanced bleeding with strong and rapid adhesion to wet tissue surfaces at 10-100x higher the strength of competitors.
  • Matregenix, Irvine, Calif.: An innovative platform technology for soft-tissue repair, called MatriNova, that features a programmable non-biologic, antimicrobial, hybrid-scale fiber matrix engineered to be similar to a human extracellular matrix and maintains tensile strength with flexibility.
  • SafeBeat Rx, Chico, Calif.: A first-of-its-kind, home-based, antiarrhythmic drug initiation kit that replaces a hospitalization, which is typically required to initiate oral drugs for atrial fibrillation.
  • Sana Health, Inc., Sandy, Utah: An neuro-modulation device that provides anxiety relief on demand by using audiovisual stimulation to increase the balance between the left and right sides of a patient's brain.
  • Sense Neuro Diagnostics, Cincinnati, Ohio: An innovative, non-invasive technology that enables rapid, comprehensive detection of stroke subtype and traumatic brain injuries as well as continuous brain injury monitoring.
  • Sonogen Medical, Inc., Chevy Chase, Md.: An ultrasonic bone growth stimulation device that optimizes bone fracture healing while providing real-time feedback on both patient compliance and the fracture healing process.

The winning student submission and its innovation are:

  • Eclipxe, San Francisco, Calif.: A mobile app with music designed with research and organized by mood and genre that decreases depression, anxiety and any other mental health related issue.

DTC's Medical Innovation Challenge is aligned with four medtech consortia representing more than $20 billion in health technology contracting authority: Medical CBRN Defense Consortium (MCDC), Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Consortium (CWMD), Medical Technology Enterprise Consortium (MTEC), Senior Healthcare Innovation Consortium (SHIC). This year's challenge featured several areas of interest, including: devices and sensors, digital and hardware, therapeutics and treatments, materials and manufacturing, and readiness and response. Administrators of the challenge encouraged applications from transformative healthtech and biotech innovators representing dual-use solutions for both civilian and national security applications.
