A materials breakthrough for mmWave 5G wireless devices

WILMINGTON, Del. (PRWEB) September 09, 2022

DuPont Microcircuit and Component Materials (MCM) announced that its GreenTape™ 9KC Low-Temperature Co-fired Ceramic (LTCC) has recently won a 2022 R&D 100 Award, R&D Magazine's signature program designed to identify and celebrate the top 100 revolutionary technologies introduced in the previous year. For the past 60 years, the R&D 100 Awards have comprised the most prestigious innovation awards program, honoring great R&D pioneers and their revolutionary ideas in science and technology.

"It‘s a tremendous honor to receive this prestigious award, which demonstrates our commitment to innovation through seamless collaboration with customers and partners, providing cutting-edge products and solutions to address critical challenges of today and tomorrow," said DuPont MCM Global Technology Leader Yu-Ling Hsiao.

The MCM GreenTape™ 9KC LTCC system with Ag metallization is known for extremely low dielectric loss at Df ≤ 0.0009 throughout the 5G millimeter wave wireless communication frequencies. This system enables economic mass production for high-reliability modules featuring heterogenous IC packaging, antennae, and signal routing. The project co-developer, Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), with support from the Technology Division of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, invested in the deployment of high-frequency materials for communications. ITRI successfully designed, built, and tested a system based on a 9KC Antenna in Package (AiP) that demonstrates the power of the material platform to provide a tangible reference design aligned with the cost structure of volume production.

"To meet the component requirement for RF transceiver in various frequency bands for 5G mmWave, ITRI established the advanced key technologies to implement and validate the feasibility and high design freedom of LTCC technology for mmWave communication applications," said Tzong-Ming Lee, Vice President and General Director of Material and Chemical Research Laboratories at ITRI, adding, "We made a breakthrough in 5G mmWave applications in collaboration with DuPont MCM, and jointly developed the AiP module with excellent thermal conductivity and sustained low loss, which are ideal for high-frequency applications."

GreenTape™ LTCC materials will be offered in the future to advance instant communication for autonomous vehicles, 5G mmWave band, military operations, remote surgery, robotics, and other applications.
