Asthma is one of the most common lifelong chronic diseases in Puerto Rico and across the rest of the United States according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The agency reports that 1 in 13 Americans (more than 25 million) lives with the condition. Add allergies to the equation and the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America states that over 65 million Americans are affected.

Asthma is a lung disease that can cause repeated episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness and coughing. In extreme cases, it can even result in death. To help spread awareness of asthma and allergies, and steps people can take to manage their condition and prevent new cases, the month of May is recognized as Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month.

“This is no cure for asthma, but it can be managed with medical treatment and avoiding environmental triggers,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “Triggers are things that can cause asthma symptoms, an episode or an attack. For those who have asthma, they may react to just one trigger or may find that exposure to several substances can act as triggers for them. These vary from person to person, but some of the most common ones include exposure to tobacco smoke, dust mites, outdoor air pollution, chemical irritants, cockroach allergen, pets, mold, nitrogen dioxide, and smoke from burning wood or grass.”

Asthmatics need to know what they are being exposed to in their home, school or work to avoid environmental triggers and manage the disease. Dedicated to helping asthmatics and allergy sufferers in Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean are the indoor environmental quality (IEQ) and industrial hygiene experts at Zimmetry Environmental. Their professionals offer air testing and monitoring services to identify biological and chemical asthma triggers, allergens and respiratory irritants. If test results indicate IEQ concerns, Zimmetry's experts can provide the knowledge to mitigate exposure risks and create a healthy indoor environment.
