Lifesaving has been an important part of Hull's history and Hull's most famous lifesaver, Joshua James, became the first keeper of the Pt. Allerton U.S. Lifesaving Station. He and his crews are estimated to have saved over 1000 people from shipwrecks off the coast of Hull. The Hull Lifesaving Museum is now located in the former Pt. Allerton Lifesaving Station. Hull is also home to the U.S. Coast Guard Station Pt. Allerton since 1969. Hull is also home of the first and oldest manned lighthouse in the nation, Boston Light.
