Singular Sleep, the first-ever online sleep apnea center, is now offering a program to determine the pressure setting needed for CPAP machines without having to go to a sleep lab.

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. (PRWEB) May 18, 2020

Online sleep apnea center Singular Sleep has launched a new program to help patients with sleep apnea find the required pressure for their CPAP machines from the comfort of their homes.

"The traditional method has been to undergo an in-lab CPAP titration study after the diagnosis of sleep apnea is made in order to find the most effective pressure setting for the individual," said Dr. Joseph Krainin, President of Singular Sleep. "However, due to COVID-19, the vast majority of sleep labs are closed. We have become aware that, because of these closures, many people have been unable to start the CPAP therapy that they need." Krainin notes that untreated sleep apnea can negatively impact quality of life and health outcomes, increasing the risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and car accidents among other problems. "So we thought, how can we help these folks get the treatment that they need? And this program was born," Krainin said.

Instead of spending a night in a sleep lab, Singular Sleep sends an auto-titrating CPAP machine (APAP) to the patient's home. Prior to shipping, the machines are sterilized and outfitted with new air filters, tubing, and water chambers to prevent the risk of infection. The machines are used for a week and then returned to Singular Sleep. The APAP records the pressures that were needed to keep the patient's airway open during the night. Dr. Krainin reviews the data from the APAP machine and then recommends the optimal pressure setting for the patient. "We also have the ability to remotely set the pressure of many newer CPAP machines for patients," he adds.

Dr. Krainin said that a home CPAP titration is not a new concept. "Health systems like Kaiser Permanente have been using this process for years with great outcomes," according to Krainin.

With the launch of this new service line, Singular Sleep is also offering compelling incentives towards the purchase of new CPAP machines. The company is currently promoting a $100 discount on a new CPAP when ordered at the same time as the home CPAP test.

Besides finding the initial CPAP pressure, the service can be used for CPAP pressure rechecks, known as "retitrations," which are recommended in certain circumstances such as:

  • If, over time, the patient has had a decline in the quality of their sleep or the development of problematic daytime sleepiness despite using their CPAP.
  • There has been significant weight loss or weight gain.
  • The patient has had nasal or upper airway surgery for sleep apnea.
