PEKIN, Ill. (PRWEB) February 19, 2020

Radically Open DBT (RODBT), a new, transdiagnostic treatment that targets maladaptive overcontrolled coping, will be the featured discussion on opening day of the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (iaedp™) 2020 Symposium, scheduled for March 26 – 29 at the Omni at ChampionsGate in Orlando.

"Wear a Hawaiian Shirt and Eat Dessert First! Introduction to and Lessons from RODBT: A Novel Treatment for Eating Disorders," presented by Danielle Doucette, PsyD, CEDS and Abigail Brown, PsyD, will be one of more than 70 presentations and workshops during the iaedp™ 35th annual conference.

During the discussion scheduled for 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, Drs. Doucette and Brown will address how eating disorders, in particular, anorexia nervosa, are often accompanied by excessive overcontrolled (OC) coping strategies, loneliness and isolation.

Rigid rule-governed behaviors, a restricted range of emotions, a need for sameness and risk aversion are not uncommon in this population. These features require specific interventions because they impact not only one's relationship to food, but also one's interpersonal relationships. Treatment requires an approach different from traditional impulse control strategies often taught to individuals with eating disorders.

According to Dr. Doucette, while those strategies have been found to be effective in treating bulimia nervosa or binge-eating disorder, those difficulties tend to be less associated with excessive overcontrol, found in anorexia nervosa. Anorexia continues to be a difficult-to-treat disorder and RODBT offers a new approach to treatment.

Dr. Doucette is a Clinical Psychologist and Director of Eating Disorder Treatment at Midwest Counseling and Diagnostics in Chicago. She has earned the designation of a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and is trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Exposure and Response Prevention and Radically-Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Dr. Doucette has completed an intensive training with the treatment developer of RODBT and receives supervision from an RODBT-approved supervisor to ensure that she is adherent to the treatment.

Dr. Brown is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, specializing in eating disorders, anxiety, depression and body image concerns. She practices at Cityscape Counseling in Chicago and Evanston. Dr. Brown earned her doctorate from Adler University. She has received intensive training in Radically Open Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (RODBT) and is a 2019 recipient of an RODBT Clinical Scholar Award in order to further advance her RODBT training.
