NORWALK, Conn., July 29, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Thomas J. Walsh, MD, a professor of ophthalmology and neurology at Yale University who has contributed a large volume of books and articles to the medical literature over his fifty-year teaching career at the renowned institution, has completed his new book "A Reckoning on the Drum": an engaging blend of history and imagination in a compelling tale of duty, service, and legacy.

Thomas writes, "Most great men who change history for the better or the worse live a reasonable life span. We know how their lives turn out. There is little room for speculation about what they might have done.
There are very few persons who make their mark early in their careers and then die. This leaves all of us speculating what the rest of their life might have been.

General George Armstrong Custer was such a man. He was famous in his twenties. He was dead in his late thirties. What would the rest of his life have been like if he had lived? Who would he have met? History continues whether anyone lives or dies. However, their living could have changed history.

Who would Custer have met, and what could he have influenced? He would certainly have created changes in the military. However, before his death, he already was a national figure in the political arena. Would his career have ended as abruptly after the Little Big Horn battle if he had won it, which he did not? Despite a poor performance, would he still have been a national hero?

In the 1800's in British India the colonel of the regiment would gather his officers late in the afternoon in the cool of a shade tree if possible and conduct regimental business. They would create a desk for him by placing the regimental drums to one side in front of him and place a board over them to make a desk. Then anyone who was to be brought before him for any punishment would stand before this make shift desk and explain their conduct to the Colonel. This was referred to as "A Reckoning on the Drum". Could he still have had a great career?"
