Media invitation - World Cancer Day: the IRIC is setting up two scientific outreach events

MONTREAL, Feb. 1, 2019 /CNW Telbec/ - On the occasion of World Cancer Day (February 4), the Institute for Research in Immunology and Cancer (IRIC) of the Université de Montréal is organizing two scientific outreach events highlighting the importance of helping to advance research to fight the disease.

On February 4, from 7am to 9am, a breakfast-chat will be held to discuss the hopes and challenges involving research. The discussion will revolve around the Leucegene Project, which deals with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), bringing together fundamental research, clinical applications and evaluation of the socioeconomic impact of such a project.

Also, the second edition of the event, "Behind the Scenes: Cancer Research", spotlighting the next generation of Investigators, will be held on February 7, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.

Both events will be hosted by Yanick Villedieu, journalist, host, author and lecturer, specializing in science and medicine. Yanick Villedieu hosted Radio-Canada's radio show Les années lumière for almost 35 years.

February 4 - Cancer: hope and challenges (Breakfast-chat revolving around the Leucegene Project) with four Investigators

More than 50,000 cases of AML are diagnosed each year in Canada, the United States and Europe. The survival rate is approximately 27%. The Leucegene Project's mission is to design tools that will help to better predict the prognosis of patients suffering from the disease and to develop new therapies. For the occasion, four members of the Leucegene Project team will discuss their promising research work targeting this major cause of cancer-related deaths in young adults.

February 7 – Behind the Scenes: Cancer Research with 16 next-generation Investigators

For a second straight year, members of the next generation of Investigators from the IRIC have organized the "Behind the Scenes: Cancer Research" event, bringing together 16 young scientists who will present their research work in "scientific speed dating" mode. The communicators will take on the challenge of making science more accessible using an "express" formula.

Available for interviews will be:

• Thomas Milan, co-organizer of the event, Molecular Biology Ph.D. student (Brian Wilhelm's lab) and President of the IRIC's Students' Association (AÉRIC)
• Delphine Bouilly, Ph.D., guest speaker and Principal Investigator (Design and Application of Electronic Nanobiosensors)
• Nadine Beauger, Ph.D., MBA, guest speaker and Chief Executive Officer, IRICoR
