MONTRÉAL, Aug. 23, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - The countdown has begun: there are only 16 days left to discover or see again the Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Unstable Presence exhibition at the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal (until September 9). The temporary exhibition, which consists of several immersive installations that combine science, technology, poetry and politics, has provoked strong reactions from visitors and the media since its opening last May. Visitors will also get the chance to meet the artist during a special event organized for the end of the exhibition: Rafael Lozano-Hemmer will speak with artist Krzysztof Wodiczko, on Friday, September 7, at Concordia University.

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer's friend and collaborator on Zoom Pavillon (2015), Krzysztof Wodiczko is well known for his socially involved practice, which notably incorporates large-scale slide and video projections on public buildings and monuments. Known since the 1980s for his social art, he is the artist behind Homeless Projection: Place des Arts (2014), a site-specific projection in which the bodies and voices of the neighbourhood's homeless appeared on the multi-tiered surface of Théâtre Maisonneuve. Coproduced by the MAC, the piece was presented as part of the Biennale de Montréal 2014.

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer was born in Mexico in 1967. He was the first artist to represent Mexico at the Venice Biennale, with an exhibition at Palazzo Van Axel in 2007. He has also shown at biennials and triennials in Cuenca, Havana, Istanbul, Kochi, Liverpool, Melbourne (National Gallery of Victoria), Montreal, Moscow, New Orleans, New York (International Center of Photography), Seoul, Seville, Shanghai, Singapore and Sydney. Lozano-Hemmer's artistic production has been the subject of monographs and performances in numerous institutions, including MUAC in Mexico City (2015), SFMOMA (2012), the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney (2011), the Manchester Art Gallery (2010), the Guggenheim Museum (2009) and the Barbican Centre in London (2008).

Born in 1943 in Warsaw, Krzysztof Wodiczko lives and works in New York, Boston and Warsaw. Since the early 1980s he has produced more than eighty public projections in Australia, Austria, Canada, England, Germany, Holland, Northern Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Spain, Switzerland and the United States.  At the same time, he has been designing and implementing a series of nomadic instruments and vehicles with homeless, immigrant and war veteran operators, for their survival and communication. Wodiczko won the Hiroshima Art Prize in 1998 for his contribution as an international artist to world peace, and has represented Canada and Poland at the Venice Biennale. He is Professor of Art, Design, and the Public Domain at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

An unusual and unique museum experience

Largest-ever solo show of Rafael Lozano-Hemmer ever presented in Canada or the United States, Unstable Presence is a major survey of his work over the past 18 years, bringing together 21 pieces, including several large-scale immersive installations. In his work, Lozano-Hemmer draws on science, technology, politics, sociology, poetry, music and art history, nourishing a rich conversation with the public.

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Unstable Presence is co-organized by the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). The exhibition is co-curated by Lesley Johnstone, Curator and Head of Exhibitions and Education, François LeTourneux, Associate Curator at the MAC and Rudolf Frieling, Curator of Media Arts at SFMOMA. The exhibition will travel to Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey (MARCO), Mexico, in 2019 and to the SFMOMA, from April 25 to September 6, 2020.
