PARSIPPANY, N.J., Aug. 23, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Representing a $7 billion USD market for synthetic latex polymers, European and CIS countries are predicted to grow at a rate of 1.6% and 2.3%, respectively, according to Synthetic Latex Polymers: Global Business Analysis and Opportunities, a recently published report by Kline.

Choice and consumption of emulsion polymer types are highly dependent on regional market characteristics, such as industrial capabilities, price sensitivity, and role of regulations. While carboxylated styrene-butadiene (X-SB) remains the leading synthetic latex polymer in volume terms, and pure acrylics represent the largest chemistry in terms of value in Europe, strengthening regulations of volatile organic compounds emissions may lead to a shift in the European market. Vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE) is expected to be the fastest-growing polymer in Europe through 2022 because of its environment-friendly profile, competitive pricing, and favorable application mix.

CIS countries are increasingly focusing on developing manufacturing capabilities and are supporting this goal by implementing import substitution programs, such as the import substitution program put in place by the Russian government. This will offer increased growth and various business opportunities for synthetic latex polymer suppliers in the region through 2022.

Consumption of synthetic latex polymers is increasing steadily in Europe due to growth in the construction industry as well as new demand for synthetic latex polymers in paper applications. While consumption of synthetic latex polymers in CIS is significantly lower than in Europe, the CIS region offers higher growth potential.

Styrene acrylics lead by a large amount in terms of volume and value in CIS countries, a fact explained by this product's wide application variety, local availability, and competitive pricing in Russia. Russia accounts for 70% of the demand for synthetic latex polymers in CIS, largely due to the country's strong industrial development and establishment of large manufacturing industries in comparison to other CIS countries.

Among the synthetic latex polymer chemistries, VAE is expected to be the fastest growing in both Europe and CIS mainly because of its environment-friendly profile combined with competitive pricing.

"Development of alternate technologies, such as hot-melt adhesives, thermally bonded nonwovens, and radial tires, challenges the growth of synthetic latex polymers, and so does environment-friendly trends, such as replacement of paper by digital media and preference for natural polymers," comments Shilpi Mehrotra, the report's manager.

Since the acquisition of the Hexion Performance Adhesives & Coatings division by British-based Synthomer in 2016, German company BASF dropped from the leading supplier position of synthetic latex polymers in Europe to the second-leading supplier, distantly followed by Celanese, Wacker and Dow Chemical. Their combined market share is estimated at over 60% by volume in 2017. However, there are more than 40 suppliers, including captive producers, with significant sales in the European market.
