Johnson, who graduated this year from Wauseon High School in Wauseon, Ohio, will use the scholarship to study journalism at the University of Missouri.

"Cory's curiosity and drive will serve him well," said Andrea Snyder Edney, President of the National Press Club. "We applaud his good work, and look forward to seeing him continue to grow as a reporter."

Johnson has already showed he is a very capable reporter, working for his local newspaper The Village Reporter in Wauseon.

"He has proven himself to be one of the best part-time contributors that I have had the privilege of working with over the past 14 years," Forrest Church, The Village Reporter's editor, said. "His writing is original and creative and his abilities as a journalist meet and exceed others with far more experience than him."

Johnson also served as his high school newspaper's editor in chief, but has also shown he has the capability of being a true multimedia reporter leading efforts to create a converged newsroom at his local community access television station "to give videographers access to create works of art through multimedia, visual technologies, and written word with the sole vision of giving local residents a total encompassing journalistic view on the happenings of the school and community," said Michael Prior, INTV 5's station manager.

The Club's scholarship judges were impressed with his ability to maturely handle coverage for his local paper, particularly his handling of a complex court case.

Johnson also showed the judges his capability to not only report a story in print but through video segments as well.
