Today, Muslims in Canada and around the world celebrate the beginning of Eid al-Adha

OTTAWA, Aug. 21, 2018 /CNW/ - Today marks the beginning of Eid al-Adha, one of the holiest days in the Muslim calendar. Eid al-Adha celebrates the end of the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.

Muslims in Canada and around the world will come together with family and friends to pray, enjoy festive meals, and exchange gifts and wishes. At the heart of this celebration are the values of compassion, generosity to those in need and forgiveness—these are also values that Canadians share.

This year, as we mark the 30th anniversary of the Canadian Multiculturalism Act, Eid al-Adha is an opportunity to recognize the Muslim community for its immense contributions to making Canada a welcoming, inclusive and prosperous country. I invite Canadians of all backgrounds to learn more about the cultural richness of the Muslim community, which adds so much to the diversity that is the strength and pride of our country.

As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism, I wish everyone celebrating Eid al-Adha a wonderful holiday. Eid Mubarak!
