Sketchfab Announces "MASSIVE" - Online Support for Huge 3D Files

The technology, still in Alpha, teases streaming support for millions of triangles opening up huge possibilities for big data users.

PR Newswire

NEW YORK, Aug. 15, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- In its ongoing initiative to bring any and all 3D content to the web, Sketchfab, in collaboration with Iconem and CNRS, has unveiled a brand new approach to supporting much larger data sets in its embeddable 3D viewer. The new product, MASSIVE by Sketchfab, is an alpha version for now, with many improvements in progress.

MASSIVE uses a combination of data streaming and automated Level of Detail (LOD) mesh processing to make it possible to browse much larger 3D models in a browser. The technology currently supports OBJ and PLY datasets and – within reasonable storage limitations – there is no size limit on the data set that can be displayed.

Sketchfab unveiled MASSIVE by sharing examples of aerial scanned data and archaeological dig sites from Sketchfab community members Gerpho, Pix4d, and the DigiArt consortium. Initial examples show data sets of over 80 million triangles effortlessly streamed into a browser window.

The current version of MASSIVE also supports vertex color with optimized streaming texture support coming soon along with further optimization for low-powered devices and slower connection speeds.

MASSIVE is currently scheduled for a full release in 2019 and organizations that can both benefit from the technology and inform its feature set are encouraged to contact the team at Sketchfab.com/enterprise.
