NEW YORK, Aug. 15, 2018 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Madison, WI-based logistics company SwanLeap grew an incredible 75,660.8 percent over the past three years to place it in the No. 1 position  on the Inc. 5000 list of the 5000 fastest growing private companies in the US.

To put SwanLeap's accomplishment in perspective, the No. 1 company on last year's Inc. 5000 grew 50,058 percent.

SwanLeap founder Brad Hollister had an idea to revolutionize the excruciatingly complex world of shipping logistics, an "eBay of freight" marketplace called Freight Access. Venture capital funds clamored to fund it. Then a call with his top customer made him realize he was going about it all wrong. Hollister had two kids and already burned through his savings and retirement plan, and he had to scramble to find another idea for his business. That idea was SwanLeap – a platform that integrated directly with shippers' and carriers' systems, using machine learning to make sure every shipment goes out at the lowest price possible.

The average company on the 2018 Inc. 5000 achieved a three-year average growth of 538.2 percent and a median of 171.8 percent. The Inc. 5000's aggregate revenue was $206.1 billion in 2017, accounting for 664,095 jobs over the past three years. Complete information about the Inc. 5000, including company profiles and an interactive database that can be sorted by industry, region, and other criteria, can be found at www.inc.com/inc5000.

"If your company is on the Inc. 5000, it's unparalleled recognition of your years of hard work and sacrifice," says Inc. editor in chief James Ledbetter. "The lines of business may come and go, or come and stay. What doesn't change is the way entrepreneurs create and accelerate the forces that shape our lives."

The annual Inc. 5000 event honoring the companies on the list will be held October 17 to 19, 2018, at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort, in San Antonio, Texas. As always, speakers include some of the greatest innovators and business leaders of our generation.

Listings and profiles of the top 500 companies appear in the September issue of Inc. magazine (available on newsstands August 15) and on Inc.com. The complete Inc. 5000 appears on Inc.com and in Inc.'s tablet editions, starting on August 15.

The Inc. 5000 list made its debut in 1981 as a ranking of the 100 fastest-growing private companies in the U.S. The following year, it expanded to 500 companies and, in 2007, the Inc. 5000 was inaugurated. Microsoft, Zappos, Clif Bar, Intuit, Chobani, Zipcar, Oracle (Vizio, Go Pro, and Under Armour) gained early exposure as members of the Inc. 500. Through each iteration, Inc. has sought to recognize and to celebrate the creativity, dedication, and hard work that entrepreneurs put into building their companies. Notable companies from this year include Thinx, Home Chef, Brooklinen, Peloton, Pop Sockets, MOD Pizza, and Bombas.

Methodology

The 2018 Inc. 5000 are ranked according to percentage revenue growth when comparing 2014 and 2018. To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by March 31, 2014. They had to be U.S.-based, privately held, for profit, and independent—not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies—as of December 31, 2017. (Since then, a number of companies on the list have gone public or been acquired.) The minimum revenue required for 2014 is $100,000; the minimum for 2017 is $2 million. As always, Inc. reserves the right to decline applicants for subjective reasons. Companies on the Inc. 500 are featured in Inc.'s September issue. They represent the top tier of the Inc. 5000, which can be found at http://www.inc.com/inc5000.
