NEW YORK, Aug. 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Jusoor, an international humanitarian NGO committed to empowering Syrian youth, today announced its collaboration with language learning pioneer, Voxy, to help hundreds of refugees improve their English language skills. After just three months of instruction, which included over 1,000 live lessons, nearly 80 percent of the refugee learners improved their proficiency level, moving from Elementary to Intermediate, according to the Common European Framework of Reference.

"This partnership represents a commitment to expanding access to educational opportunities for learners who have been separated from family and friends, with nowhere to call home," said Katharine Nielson, Chief Education Officer of Voxy. "We are proud to apply the transformative potential of innovative language learning technology to maximize the reach of an NGO that understands the people - and dynamics - on the ground."

According to the State Department, the U.S. has re-settled just 44 Syrian refugees in FY 2018; down from nearly 6,000 during the same period last year.

"Our leadership and on-ground teams have been impressed with the outcomes of this initiative," said Rania Succar, Board Director for Jusoor. "Voxy provides an effective way for these students to learn the language, and it gives them the confidence they need to make the leap to higher education, despite extraordinary odds."
