Gilbane Building Company Awarded Merit Award for Green Projects by ENR California

California State University Associated Students Sustainability Center project wins prestigious award

LOS ANGELES (PRWEB) August 01, 2018

Gilbane Building Company has been named as the Merit Award winner in the Green Building category for Engineering News Record California Best Project Awards. Projects were evaluated on the ability of the project team to overcome challenges, contribution to the industry and community, safety and construction and design quality. Winning projects will be honored at events in October.

"When a project team, which includes the owner, end user, design team, and subcontractors, creates an atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration with a common goal of building the highest quality project in the safest manner possible you can achieve great things. We are very happy to see this project honored with this merit award." said Emery Molnar, Vice President for Gilbane Building Company.

"Gilbane was a collaborative partner committed to achieving the project's sustainability goals," said Nathan Kim, Principal Firmwide Education Practice Area Leader, Gensler.

The collaboration behind the CSU Associated Students Sustainability Center was unique and involved campus leadership, the CSU Institute for Sustainability, student groups, partners in architecture, and other community stakeholders. The goal was to create a multi-functional space to serve as a campus recycling collection station, a hub for student sustainability programs, and an administrative home to the Institute for Sustainability – with the center becoming the focal point for the university's and surrounding community's environmental and sustainability programs, which was the vision of the 30 students who led the initiative.

This project showcases many sustainable features including a seminar room, a conference room, student workspace, lounge, a community resource center, restrooms and a covered courtyard which with both house equipment for recycling and serve as the rooftop structure for a 25kw photovoltaic system with approximately 100 solar panels. The building envelope is high performance, including glazing systems, enhanced insulation, durable and sustainable cladding, cool or green roof systems, and day-lighting throughout the complex to minimize energy usage. The landscape is drought tolerant and includes a bio-swale. A graywater system connected to onsite lavatories and sinks will be used to irrigate the projects landscape; a solar thermal hot water system and vacuum composting toilets have also been incorporated into the project.
