Gary Digital Academy Now Enrolling Students in Grades K-8 for 2018-2019 School Year


New Public School Option Offers Blend of Online and In-Person

Digital Academy
(GDA), a new tuition-free, full-time public school
program of Gary Community School Corporation, is now accepting
enrollment applications for the 2018-2019 school year. In its inaugural
year, GDA will offer students in Kindergarten through 8th grade a
blended program where they will participate in twice-weekly, in-person
instruction at the Gary Area Career Center, with the remainder of the
week's courses to be completed online.

"The Gary Community School Corporation is committed to providing a
quality education for all students," said Superintendent Dr. Peggy
Hinckley. "We are thrilled that Gary Digital Academy will offer students
in Lake County and beyond access to an innovative online education
experience that meets their needs and supports their academic goals."

Students in all grade levels will take a full course load across the
core subjects of math, science, language arts and history. Students will
be required to attend all live online and in-person class sessions.
Combining innovative technology with a rigorous curriculum led by
Indiana-certified teachers, GDA aims to provide each student with a
personalized learning experience.

"The focus of all GDA teachers, administrators and support staff will be
on student success," said Rachel Goodwin, the school's principal. "The
blend of online and in-person instruction will create a supportive
environment that addresses the individual needs of each student,
encouraging them to become productive, responsible and caring citizens."

GDA's dedicated staff will facilitate lessons during live, interactive
classes online and at the Gary Area Career Center. Teachers will also
offer one-on-one instruction, online chat sessions and family phone
calls to build close partnerships with in support of academic success.

Students enroll in online school for a variety of reasons, including
advanced learning, a bullying-free environment, and the ability to
balance their education with extracurricular pursuits or medical needs.
GDA's blended approach with both online and in-person instruction will
give students a learning option that is right for them.

Outside of the virtual classroom, classes at the Gary Area Career Center
two days a week will allow students to further develop connections with
their teachers and classmates. Throughout the year, field trips and
social outings will contribute to the sense of school community, and
virtual clubs and student organizations will give GDA students a
platform to further explore interests together in the online setting.
