Opioid Prescribers: Plan for the Best, Be Ready for the Worst

Medical/Legal Track at PAINWeek 2018 Provides Valuable Insights for Prescribing Clinicians on Protecting Their Patients and Their Practice

PR Newswire

MONTCLAIR, N.J., July 31, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- As part of its popular Medical/Legal curriculum track, a new course to be offered at PAINWeek 2018 will provide insight to help prescribers adequately document their rationale for drug testing and defend their treatment decisions in the face of escalating scrutiny. Get Your Specimens in Order will be presented by senior PAINWeek faculty member Jennifer Bolen, JD, on Thursday, September 6. Attorney Bolen noted the importance of prescribers' attention to licensing board, payer, and professional society guidance on ordering drug tests and using test results when treatment involves opioids. "The government's decision to highlight an opioid prescriber's failure to timely utilize drug test results is significant, and suggests the government is looking at other factors tied to medical decision making." she observed. Also on September 6, Attorney Bolen will be guiding attendees in the development and implementation of overdose event policies and protocols in her course Embrace Changes and Prevent Overdose: A Basic Blueprint for Legal Risk Mitigation and Response. This session will use case examples and disseminate sample policies that participants can tailor to their respective practices and state licensing board framework. Bolen commented, "Too many physicians and allied healthcare practitioners are caught unaware by the legal issues surrounding overdose events, both fatal and nonfatal. Often, prescribers are the last to learn about an overdose event and, worse yet, fail to take action once notified. Professional licensing board and criminal cases involving overdose events do not usually end well for the prescriber, but there is much the prescriber can do proactively to signal his/her intent to get things right."

PAINWeek 2018 will feature a diverse curriculum in the following course concentrations: acute pain management, advanced practice practitioners, behavioral, integrative, and interventional pain management, chronic pain syndromes, medical/legal issues, neurology, pain and chemical dependency, physical therapy, palliative care, and pharmacotherapy. There will also be full-day programs presented by the American Pain Society, the American Society of Pain Educators, the American Headache Society, and the International Pelvic Pain Society.

Practicing healthcare professionals can register to attend for the discounted price of $799 until July 31. To learn more about PAINWeek 2018, and register for the conference, click here visit http://www.painweek.org/painweek.html.
