Statement by Minister Rodriguez and Minister Joly on the Day of Commemoration of the Great Upheaval of the Acadians

Canada NewsWire

On July 28, we commemorate the Great Upheaval of the Acadians

OTTAWA, July 28, 2018 /CNW/ - The Great Upheaval, which began in 1755, saw thousands of Acadians deported by the British, who set fire to their homes and confiscated their land.

This dark chapter of our history could have wiped out this culture forever, were it not for the courage, strength and determination of the Acadian people.

Over 250 years later, Acadians from all walks of life are celebrated across the country and around the world for their artistic, cultural, sport and economic achievements. Acadia is recognized everywhere in Canada and the Francophonie for its cultural vitality, as well as its natural beauty.

As the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism and the Minister of Tourism, Official Languages and La Francophonie, we encourage all Canadians today to honour the memory of the victims of the Great Upheaval and to celebrate the communities that Acadians have built.
