WASHINGTON, July 26, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) celebrates the 27th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 2018. Congress enacted the ADA "to provide a clear and comprehensive national mandate for the elimination of discrimination against individuals with disabilities." The ADA protects people with special needs from discrimination in employment, public services and accommodations, services operated by private entities, transportation, and telecommunication.

NAELA member attorneys serve the elderly, people with special needs, and their families. Last month, in recognition of the Supreme Court's Olmstead decision, NAELA urged Congress to pass the bipartisan Empower Care Act. The legislation would renew the Money Follows the Person demonstration project (MFP), which has helped more than 75,000 seniors and people with disabilities move out of nursing homes and back to the community. MFP expired in September 30, 2016, and all participating states will run out of funding by the end of the year.

"NAELA is dedicated to advocating for these vulnerable populations to ensure that they live full and independent lives, and their rights are protected," said NAELA President Michael J. Amoruso, Esq., Fellow, CAP.
