Greater New York Passive House Residence is Slated to Break Ground

Canadian Passive House expert Marken Design + Consult has designed a modern single family residence aiming to achieve the stringent Passive House standard as one of the first in Connecticut, USA.

VANCOUVER, Canada, and STAMFORD, Conn., July 26, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The two storey plus walk out basement residence uses up to 90 per cent less energy for heating and cooling and up 65% on operational costs than a standard house. Triple pane windows, advanced wood construction, heat pump hot water system, high level of insulation, eco-friendly materials and an ultra efficient heat recovery ventilation system are a few of the extensive sustainable building features incorporated into the custom passive design.

"A house that is designed and built to the Passive House Standard provides exemplary comfort all year round. While the standard is known for rigorous energy consumption benchmarks, it also has rigorous comfort benchmarks," says Alexander Maurer, principal at Marken Design + Consulting.

Key techniques applied include continuous insulation throughout, optimized solar gain and building orientation and an ultra-airtight construction, minimizing the need for an active heating and cooling system and maximizing the energy savings.

There is a growing population of passive projects in the Greater New York area with nine Passive House Institute certified buildings in New York State and four in New York City. There are twenty more projects underway, including several large-scale developments, which will create over 300,000 square feet of certified projects in the next few years. The majority of these projects are residential with an additional 28 projects that have been built incorporating passive house principles.

The Passive House Building Energy standard originated in Germany in the late 1980s and is fast becoming the world standard in green, sustainable building techniques. It is estimated there are over 60,000 passive house buildings around the world.
