ASAE recognized the IAmIR campaign in the category of "The Power to Create a Competitive Workforce." Through this effort, SIR is empowering members and helping to include more women and underrepresented minorities in the growing, cutting-edge medical specialty of interventional radiology.

"This award is a testament to our members' commitment to creating an interventional radiology workforce that reflects the diversity of the patients they treat," said SIR Executive Director Susan E. Sedory, MA, CAE. "It is a powerful validation that our efforts to recruit and retain interventional radiologists from diverse backgrounds are resonating outside of SIR, with other associations who seek to make a substantial, positive impact on the world every day."

IAmIR combined traditional recruitment strategies with social media marketing and interactive experiences at the society's 2018 Annual Scientific Meeting to generate broad enthusiasm for, awareness of, and engagement with interventional radiology among medical students, residents, fellows and attending physicians of all backgrounds. IAmIR continues to serve as a unifying rallying cry for the interventional radiology community and the patients they serve through the application of minimally invasive, image-guided medicine.

"Congratulations to the Society of Interventional Radiology and its partners for their efforts to enrich and strengthen lives," said Sharon J. Swan, FASAE, CAE, the chief executive officer of the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics and chair of the Power of A Awards Judging Committee. "Their initiative exemplifies how we work best when we work together and how associations have a positive influence on our everyday lives in every way."

Interventional radiologists are board-certified physicians who are trained in both radiology and minimally invasive therapies to treat conditions that once required open surgery. Using advanced imaging to guide catheters through a tiny incision, interventional radiologists apply techniques such as embolization, thrombolysis and ablation to stop bleeding, remove clots, target tumors and more. Interventional radiology treatments are as effective as open surgery, but have less pain and less recovery time, meaning patients can return to their normal lives faster.
